Anthonius Jacobus Henckel and 1805. Marie Elizabeth Dentzer. He married 903. Marie Magdalene Eschmann Abt. 1730 in Philadelphia Co, Pa.
903.Marie Magdalene Eschmann, died Unknown. She was the daughter of 1806. Abraham Eschmann and 1807. Elizabeth.
Notes for Johann Justus Henckel, Sr.:
John Justus Henckel was baptized 17 Feb 1706 in Daudenzell, Germany.(Nickname for John Justus is "Jost.")The first record found on Jost Henckle appeared in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Daudenzell, Germany, in the original handwriting of his father, the "Pfarrer," or Pastor, translated as follows:"John Justus Henkel born at Daudenzell on February 10, 1706;baptized on Feb 17, 1706;Godparent Herr John Justus Berthold, the Paletinate Collector of the Minnenberg tax district in Guttenback."
John Justus Henkel came to America at the age of eleven with his parents on one of the "Three little ships" that landed in the fall of 1717 at Philadelphia.About 1730 he married Maria Magdalena Eschmann, daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Eschmann who were of German-Swiss origin. They moved to Macungie Creek settlement and joined the Goshenhoppen congregation.(This is in present day Lehigh Co, PA.)In 1750 he sold his land and moved to Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina, settling on Dutchmans Creek about thirteen miles from Salisbury near the "Forks of the Yadkin River."In 1760, because of Indian troubles, they moved to Augusta Co, VA, in Germany Valley.(later part of Rockingham Co, VA;then part of Pendleton Co, VA;now in Pendleton Co, W. VA.In Germany Vally, Jost Henkel built a stockade with an enclosed area large enough to house his family and the families of nearby settlers. This stockade/blockhouse became known as Hinkle's Fort and was an outpost prior to and during the Revolutionary War with John Justus Henkel (Sr.) known as the fort's commander.Upon his death, his son Abraham was in charge. The fort was probably abandoned when it was no longer needed for the settler's protection.(A granite marker was erected 10 October 1935 and dedicated at the site by a Henckel family reunion held 29 May 1936.A granite marker was also placed in the Henckel farm cemetary to mark the graves of John Justus Henckel, Sr. and his wife Magdalena Eschmann who pioneered in PA, NC, and VA.)
There are various spellings of the Henckel surname, including Henckel, Henckle, Hinkel, Hinckel, etc., with Hinkle being the most widely used.
A court entry on 24 Aug 1778 proved the will of Jost Hinckle.Jost Henkel, Jr. was one of the executors of the will.
The service of John Justus Henckle as commander of Hinckle's Fort and in furnishing supplies to the Colonial forces during the Revolution has been officially recognized by the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution and other patriotic orders as qualification for membership.

912.Stephen Cole, Sr., born Abt. 1660 in England; died Unknown in Chester Co, Pa.?.He married 913. Elizabeth Temple.
913.Elizabeth Temple, died Unknown.
Notes for Stephen Cole, Sr.:
Since Stephen's wife, Elizabeth, died in 1732, and his sons left for Virginia right after this, it could be probable that Stephen started this trip with his sons. He could have died and been buried on the journey since he is not buried in the family plot in New Castle and there is no record of him in Virginia.
Elizabeth was buried on September 24, 1732 in the Cole plot at Saint Paul's Church in Chester, Pennsylvania. her tombstone reads that she was 70 years of age at death. Her son Stephen Jr, daughter-in-law, Martha, and Stephen and Martha's daughter, Elizabeth Cole, who died on June 19, 1731 at the age of 9 months, are buried with her
Children of Stephen Cole and Elizabeth Temple are:

ii. | Mark Cole, died Unknown; married Allis Evans; died Unknown. |
Notes for Mark Cole: In 1747, Mark moves down on the Black Water River, south fork of the Roanoke in Virginia. On April 16, 1747, Mark applies for 200 acres on both sides of Little Creek, a branch of Black Water River. On April 22, 1748, Mark applies for 200 acres, adjoining Stephen Cole, on the upper line on Story Creek, a branch of Pigg River. On April 27, 1748, Mark applies for 400 acres on the north fork of Chestnut Creek. Mark receives four more tracts on Back Run, Pittman Creek, Buttram Creek and Chestnut Creek, a branch of the Pigg River. Mark and two of his sons, John and Mark Jr, were active in the Episcopal Church and in the affairs of the county. On October 28, 1754, Mark took the oath of a Justice of the County Court in Chancery. In November 1754, he was appointed to view road. In May 1755, he was appointed to take tithes (taxes). On October 21, 1758, Mark was granted 300 acres on the north side of Ashpole Swamp, south side of Downing Creek in Bladen County, North Carolina. Mark and Alice sold this land to John Bounds in 1765. Mark, along with his nephew James Cole, lived in Bladen County, North Carolina for about seven years and then they moved to Craven County, South Carolina. Mark's estate administration after his death was conducted in October 1769 in Craven County, South Carolina. Mark died in 1769, "Citation granted Alice Cole, to administer on the estate and effects of Mark Cole, her late husband, of St. Marks Parish, farmer. To be read in the Parish Church of St. Marks and returned certified." Dated October 12, 1769. |
iii. | Stephen Cole, Jr., died Aft. 1744; married Martha Hunter 1726; died Unknown. |
Notes for Stephen Cole, Jr.: Stephen and Martha were married at St. David's Episcopal Church. The church was a solid brick building with tall arched windows. Stephen and Martha lived in Chester, Pennsylvania as shown by a deed dated January 19, 1726/27, which reads: "Stephen Cole of West Chester, buys from John Minshall, Property whereon the said, Minshall now dwells. Bounded Southward with James Street and with lots of John Worrall. Northward with Middle Street. Westward with lots of John Baldwin and William Pickle. Eastward with lots of Sarah Smith, Rodger Jackson and Griffith Howell." Stephen served as vestryman at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chester. He purchased seven different lots and tracts of land in the borough and county of Chester from 1726 to 1741. He was known as a butcher, landowner and vestryman. On December 26, 1744, Stephen Cole, yeoman of the borough of Chester, Province of Pennsylvania, wrote his will. He obvciously knew he was about to die, as his death occurred nine days later. He named as Executors, his "beloved wife" Martha Cole; his "Trusty Friend", Thomas Cummings; "My trusty and well beloved friend", Rev. Richard Backhouse, Clerk of St. Paul's Church. He left lots in the borough of Chester to six children. John Cole, the eldest son being of age. James and Elizabeth Cole to choose their own Guardian. Stephen, William and Mark Cole, minors to be apprenticed out to learn trades of Cordwainer, Hatter and Miller. Stephen was buried in the Cole plot in St. Paul's Churchyard in Chester, Pennsylvania with his mother and his daughter, Elizabeth that had died on June 19, 1731 at the age of nine months. The inscription of Stephen's tombstone reads that he died on January 4, 1745 at the age of 44. The Executors of the Cole estate sold the land and home where Stephen and Martha lived in Chester on April 17, 1746, stating, "Martha Cole, widow of Stephen Cole, dec. of the borough of Chester, with Thomas Cummings and Rev. Richard Backhouse, all Executors of the said, Cole estate. Sells to John Caldwell, of Chester the home where Stephen Cole did reside, located on the Market Square on the corner of Jmaes and High Streets. This home and 20 acres of land bought from Joseph Hoskins April 9, 1741." Marth Hunter was christened October 21, 1708 in Rathdrum, Wicklow, Ireland to her parents John and Margaret Hunter. Nothing else is known about her childhood or family. It is not known when she and her family came to America, but she married Stephen Cole in Chester, Pennsylvania in 1726. From this we can assume that the Hunter family's arrival in America had to occur sometime between 1709 and 1725. After Stephen's death in 1744, Martha married Robert Russell. This marriage had to take place sometime before March 1747, when Martha and Robert received mortgage money from the Stephen Cole estate. No known children resulted from this marriage. When Martha died in 1761, she was buried with Stephen Cole in the Cole plot in St. Paul's Churchyard in Chester, Pennsylvania. |
