William Dare (b. Abt. 1653, d. 15 March 1719/20)
Notes for William Dare:
William Dare was probably born about 1650-55 in Lyme Regis, Dorset, on the southern coast of England. He may have been the son of William and Gertrude Dare and grandson of a William Dare, "Mariner", who died in Lyme Regis in 1668.A very old house still standing in Lyme Regis today with the name "Yawl" in its iron gate may well be in part the original home of William Dare which he mentioned in his will as "Yaul".He apparently received a good education in England and became a sea captain before coming to America about 1680.
Here, at what became Philadelphia, he was the first proprietor of the "Blue Anchor" Inn, a small, probably primitive tavern located in the middle of today's Front Street where Dock Creek emptied into the Delaware.Next to the inn, he also maintained a wharf for trade up and down the river. Here in November of 1682, William Penn made his first landing and is thought to have stayed at the "Blue Anchor".William Dare sold this building in January 1683.
Eventually he moved to what is now Cumberland County, NJ, where he became a large landowner.Old deeds describe him as "Mariner", indicating his early sea-faring life.In 1695, he bought 100 acres of land in Back Neck, Fairfield Township, lying between the Bakc and Cohansy Creeks. In 1696, He had surveyed 100 acres of cedar swamp on Lebanon Branch about 5 miles east of Bridgeton. He later moved to 200 acres of land located in Nantuxet Neck, below Newport in Downe Township (today's Cumberland County, NJ) and here he remained.Additionally, he owned land and marsh in Turkey Point and 100 acres of cedar swamp on "Muskee gut" which he mentioned in his will.
William Dare was appointed High Sheriff of Salem County on December 9, 1703 by Lord Cornbury, Governor, and was reappointed for an additional year on September 13, 1704.He was appointed Ranger of Salem County, November 18, 1704; Captain of a comapy of militia in Salem County, February 4, 1705/6; Justic of the Peace and Judge of Common Pleas, August 21, 1707; and recommissioned Judge December 21, 1710.
Captain William Dare died at Nantuxet between March 15, 1719/20 and June 17, 1720, leaving his widow Constant and their children. He was probably buried on his family farm in a family graveyard.
