5)The last oral history story dates to 24 March 1959.This is my story. It started out like any other day at school in the first grade. After Lunch recess the Principal and Oregon State Trooper Bob Rissman walked into the class room and asked my teacher to get me ready to go home, my father had been shot in the line of duty.Dad had stopped to tell an young man that he could not double park in front of the bank, when he saw that dad was a police officer he took off and dad had to chase him down. The kid missed a turn on Cemetery Road and ended up in a ditch. The kid then bailed out of the car and started to run.Dad yelled at him to stop acouple of times the last time warning him if he didnt stop he would have to fire.Dad had told me the guy looked like a big dumb kid and he didn't really want to have to shoot him.The kid turned on dad and opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle, dad dove to the ground, with the rounds kicking up dirt as they came closer to him.One of the shots hit my father in the left side of the head and exited out the lower right side of his back. The guy that shot him was finaly arrested on a ranch in Arizona. He had escaped from a Prison in Montana where he was serving a life sentence for murder, after escaping he killed a guy and stole a rifle and his car.Dad survived this wound and lived until he was 83 years old.
