The early KIRBYS lived in New York, possibly Monroe County, as early as 1775, Gershom Hinkley KIRBY being born in 1805 to Timothy and Catherine W. (Hinckley) KIRBY. Gershom Hinkley KIRBY was named after his maternal Grandfather, Gershom HINCKLEY (1730-1809), a documented veteran of the Revolutionary War.Gershom Hinckley KIRBY married Lucy MOON in Oneida County or Monroe County, NY in 1830.Their first child, Harriet, was born in New York in 1832, second, Lucretia, in Pennsylvania in 1836, and all the other four (4) boys, Charles, Seth, Silas W. and David Allen were born in Illinois.They came to Santa Cruz, California in 1853, and later settled in Tulare County, California, beginning in about 1858.All the children ended up in Tulare County except for the first-born daughter, Harriet, who married Charles RYDER, and Silas W., who married Mary E. PAGLES. They remained in the Santa Cruz/Soquel area until their deaths.Lucretia married Julius ORTON, Charles married Rachel WRIGHT, Seth married Mary Jane COPELAND, and David Allen KIRBY never married.Silas W. KIRBY and his mother, Lucy (Moon) KIRBY, are buried in the Soquel Cemetery near Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz Co., CA.Silas had one child (possibly a stepchild), Annie D., who is still missing.Any information on Silas W. Lucy MOON is the daughter of Job and Tryphena MOON from New York.They are also believed to have lived in or around the Monroe County area of New York in the late 1700's/early 1800's.Job MOON is buried in the Shaffer Cemetery, Ogden, Monroe Co., NY.His stone inscription: "Job; d. February 1827 in the 51st year of his age."
