Axel Libacks, my grandfather, was born July 3, 1883 in Norra Finnskoga parish at Varmlands, Sweden. Axel's biological fathers name is Martin Johansson from Grue, Norway.Axel's mother, Anna Andersdotter, was born September 2, 1861.Her parents resided in Stemserud.Axel, with his brother Karl, came from Walsta, Sweden in 1909 via the North Sea on the "Empress of Britian".This ship was built for the Canadian Pacific Line by Fairfield Shipbuilding, Glasgow in 1906.
Maria was born April 19, 1900 in Sweden to Matilda, better known as Ida.Ida married Sven Enguist and he adopted Maria.Sven Enguist had also traveled ahead one year earlier. My Grandma's, Maria Lybeck, biological father staid in Sweden.His name is Leonard, last name unknown.Maria, her mother, and siblings traveled one year later.
Axel and Maria married June 18, 1917 in Canora, SK, Canada.They eventually settled in Sturgis, SK, Canada; where they raised seven children.
Karl Liback had a blacksmith shop in Ketchen, SK, Canada, but was asked to sell because he was also bootlegging alcohol.Karl, in his early 20's, ventured on to British Columbia, Canada, where he changed his name to "Charlie Lee."He eventually made it to Atlin, BC, Canada where he had a goldmine.In 1932, Karl was killed in a poker game over his claim.Karl had never married.
Julius Kriger was born in Austria, March 3, 1885.He lived in Valinsky Guberny, Russia.Here he worked as an apprentice in cabinet making, blacksmithing, and harness making.He immigrated to America when he was called to military duty.
He arrived at St. Thomas, North Dakota, USA in 1905.He moved to Wales, North Dakota, U.S.A. to stay with his Uncle August Tamke.When August moved to Haultain, SK, Canada in 1908, Julius followed in 1909.He married Mary Anweiler in Saskatoon, SK in 1916 and they homesteaded in Haultain, SK.
My parents, William and Audriene, were married on June 17, 1961 in Ketchen, SK.They lived on the homestead 10 miles outside of Porcupine Plain, SK, where they still reside.William Kriger was born October 21, 1930 in Haultain, SK to Julius and Marie Kriger.Audriene was born July 24, 1934 in Ketchen, SK to Axel and Maria Lybeck.They met through Audriene's brother, Ernest Lybeck.My mother was staying with her brother, and my father was working with him.
They had three children.Grant William, born October 13, 1962 in Porcupine Plain, SK.Gail Marie, born August 7, 1966 in Porcupine Plain, SK.Gloria Faye, born August 30, 1974 in Tisdale, SK.They have one grandson, Craig Douglas, born May 29, 1984 in Nipawin, SK to Gail.
We all stayed close to home.Grant traveled for work, but always came back to work on the farm.Gail married and lives in Porcupine Plain, SK.Gloria moved away to school and now lives in Saskatoon, SK.Craig has gone to Broadcasting School in Saskatoon, SK and worked out of town for a while, but has since moved back to Porcupine Plain, SK.
We have lost our beloved brother, Grant, to a snowmobile accident on March 16, 2003.He loved life and he loved snowmobiling.He is greatly missed.He had such a passion for life and having fun. He lived so much in his short 41 yrs than some people have lived their entire life.We love you Grant.
