Jeremiah Tibbets was about 38 years old in 1670. He married by 1655 Mary Canney.He was granted 100 acres in Dover which James Clements owned in 1719.He was a witness against Richard Pinkham in a court case in 1660.He was prison keeper of Dover in 1670 when he witnessed in a lawsuit between H. Symonds and Barefoot.His name appears on tax lists of Dover from 7/21/1657 to 1666.He signed the Declaration for Massachusetts Government October 10, 1665.
In another court case, Jeremiah's signature appears as a witness."Mr. Henry Dering, Constable, having been thrown down and nearly choked in arresting Capt. Walter Barefoot, prosecuted him, Charles Hilton and the latter's man, George Sweete.Summons dated 23 Dec. 1672."
He served on a jury at the inquest of Hannah Stokes who accidentally drowned on August 23, 1670.
He died between 5 May 1677 and 31 Oct. 1677. He came to New England with his parents on the "James" in 1635.
In the list of passengers his name is given as Jeremy. He was the eldest child of Henry ande Elizabeth Tibbetts and grew to manhood in Dover, NH. After his marriage he resided at Dovers Neck, NH. His will was proved 31 October 1677 Dover Neck, Strafford Co., NH. He was constable of Dover in 1663 and 1666; keeper of the Dover jail in 1670. He "stood up" in 1665 for the jurisdiction of massachusetts."
He was constable in 1663 and 1666 and was the keeper of the Dover jail in 1670 and for several years thereafter.
In his will, dated 5 May 1677, which was proved 31 October 1677, Jeremiah Tibbetts "of Douer vpon Puscatuqua: now Lyeinge Vpon my sick bed but of my perfect minde & memory", bequeathed to his eldest son, Jeremiah, one half of house and land described as "ye Remainer of that ten Acres of land which I bought of ye towne which Lyeth now without fence with two yearlinge steeres Already in his possession bee to him & his forever for & on ye accompt of thirteen pounds giuen to my sd sonn by his Grandfather Thomas Canny which I made use of for my owne behoofe": named his wife Mary and his eldest son, jeremiah, to be his "True and Lawfull" executors, and "doe Appoint & ordane to be in the hands of mary my wife for ye bringing up of our smale Children all my present Estate Except what shall be heerafter nominated: & ye one halfe of my now dwelling house & barne to be for her owne proper use during her lifetime but the former during her widowhood or as my Executors shall see Cause: it is to be onderstood yt I assigne to my wife the new end of the house": bequeathed to his son Thomas "at his one & twentieth yeare of age to bee for him & his forever, the other halfe of the fenced ground which is of that tenn Acres which I bought of the towne & also the halfe of my dwelling house and barne now left in the Custody of my wife": bequeathed to his daughter Mary Rawlins, and named younger children, "Hannah, Joseph, Samuel, Benjamin, Ephraim, Martha, Elizabeth, Nathaniel and Henry": and "doe Appoint my Brother Joseph Canny & my trusty & Loveing friend Serjant John Roberts" to be overseers for "the well manadgement." The till was witnessed by Job Clements and John Roberts. The estate was valued at £264.
