Notes for Marcella Martha Czech:
(MY TRIP TO POLAND July 21 to August 5 1992 By Marcella Hiemenz)I can't help but feel happy and elated to have visited the homeland of my grandparents this summer. It's rich history, the faith and charm of its people has in full unforgettable experience for me. Harvest was in full swing. However, It's been the hottest and driest year in 52 years. There were 29 of us that came to explore and research the history of our anscestors. We had a direct flight from Chicago to Warsaw, landing in their newly opened airport which wasin the making for 40 years. After spenting two days in Warsaw, my cousin, Stanley, departed by taxi for Falkowice, which is a distance of 240 miles where my Grandparents originated from and spent eight days with our cousins there. Later we were to meet and pick him up there.(The Chapel my Grandfather helped build before he came to America.) (William Marcy, Hildegard, Jim) After visiting sights of interest in Warsaw, our tour continued on to torun. After a sight seeing tour, we retired to our rooms. The next morning we went on to beautiful Gdansk located on the Baltic Sea. One of Europe's greatest shipping ports, also the home of Leah Walessa (President of Poland). We visited the memorial dedicated to the who gave their lives for Solidarity, including a young priest, Fr. George Popieusko, a mar tyr victim of communism, who is buried on the lawn of St. Stanislas Koska, in Warsaw. After spending two days in Gdansk we arrived in Poznan, Poland's firstcapital. In English, Poznan Means "get acquainted''. One of the hightlights was visiting the Cathedral with tomb of the first Polish Rukers and a very intering Bee museum. The afternoon was leisure. Everywhere we saw a lot unemployment. People were displaying their talents playing musical instruments, their works of art, and selling merchandise to make a living. The store seem adequately stocked, but people couldn't afford to buy. Our American dollar bill was .75 cent to their Zwahtik. Now it is day nine. We're getting closer to Western Poland and lower Silesia and lower Silesia and closer to our Grandparents birthplace. We stayed overnight in Wroclaw, which is the larges city of Western Poland and the Capital of lower Silesia. After breatfast we depart for the little villages ofFalkowice and Dabrowka. Yes here we are, our motor coach stops directly across the road from my Grandparents farm where my cousin, William, his wife Hildegard and family lives. Yes all 29 of us file out of the bus, plus our guide and bus driver. They were waiting to greet us with open arms. First thing Hildegard did was open the glassdoor to the chapel Grandfather helped build ( My Grandparents innigrated to America in1869 ). We explored the farm courtyard, including cows, calves, pigs, chickens, and William'sHorse. Some of the buildins are still intactas when my Grandfather lived there. They invited us into their home and treated us with coffee cake, tea and coffee. My brother, Jim was was very intering in the kind of farming they do. William showed him the combone manufactured in Poland and the sized of his farm (50 acres). We visited the grave yard and Parish, looking up record seeing a lot of familiar names. A neighbor lady by the name of Sophia Benusa came over with a huge dish of plums she freshly picked from her trees. Did that hit the spot on the bus. We drove down a ways to the village of Dsbrowka, where some of the group have relatives. We were just in time for 4:00 O'clock mass. The priest greeted us at the church us at the church door speaking English. He told us how happy he was to see us from the United States. After mass he invited us to the rectory for more coffee, cake, tea, coffee, and soft drinks. We walked and explored the village, seeing women on bikes, hoses, pulling carriages and wagons remaining me of my earlier choodhooddays. Later boarding our coach off to Czestochowa passing a sign Opole 44. We arrived at our hotal at 7;30 p.m. Times to clean up eat and bless sleep. Early next morning we started up the Bright Mountain to visit a Monastery which holds the most beautiful Famous Black Madonna Shrine. We now headed for Cracow, the birthplace of Pope John II. We visited his Childhood home, which is amuseum now. We also toured the undergrounds salt mines, which were awesome. It's day 13 now we're hearded forZakopane. On our way out we stopped at Aushwitz. the Nazi Concentration Death Camp. Our hearts were heavy and saddened by what they did to those People there . Wesaw the cell of Maximillian Kolbe (priest) who gave up his life for another prisoner.(Poland Continued on Page 7) (Poland Continued from page 3) Finnally we arrived in Zakopane and checked into our hotal. What a beautiful Scenic View, Czechoslovakia was onthe other side of the mountain. We were met by Silesian Polish dancers and Fiddle players who greeted us with a hot cup of tea spiked with vodka. Just what we needed, Our menu consisted of haunters stew, which tasted like Bouja. It was delicious, We had a wonderful even of entertainment. The next mourning we shopped and then departed for our journey back to Warsaw. Along the way we stopped at sights of intering. The one that captured my heart was the Wooden Church. The beautiful wood carvings inside and out, held the many mementos of our powerful Saints. (In the Courtyard, William with his Horse. ) (My Cousin, Stanley, Brother Jim ) We finallyarrive in Warsaw and checked in the same hotal we arrived in. Now we had to get ready for our farewell dinner and Folkdance show. After goingback to our hotal, we had to pack and get ready for our homeward flight. Day 15 we were burnt out, living out, of suitcase, but filled with a Mission of beautiful memories of Poland. Eleven of our group stayed backto visit a week longer with relative and friends. It was great to be back home and on American soil again. A Polish Prayer, Upon entering a home a guest says, Niech Wiekow. Pochwalony Jesus Chrystus . The host of the home replys: Na Wicki Wiekow . Amen.'' Translatedthis means May the name of Jesus Christ be praised Now and.
