John LaPointe (John Oliver Norris Desautel LaPointe, Olivier) was born 24 Jan 1863 in Canada West. He is listed on the 1870 Chippewa county census as Johnny Disotelle, age7, born Canada West. He is listed on the 1881 St Joseph Island (Canada) census as John LaPointe, age 16, born Algoma (Ontario, Canada).
John married Mary Jane LaValley on 25 Nov 1890 in Wilson, Menominee, Michigan. Mary was born 6 Jan 1874.
It started out that I was looking at the 1870 census for Chippewa county and wondering why there were no LaPointes on it when I knew they lived there. The next-to-last page I looked at had them listed under the name of Disotelle, an anglicized version of Desautels dit LaPointe, their French name. It lists14 people as 3 families which are all actually one family, andhas some kids living with the grandparents. Your John is listed as "Johnny" age 7, which means he was born in 1863. My John(which is the one we already knew about) is listed first asJohn, age 24 (thus b. 1846) married Mary in March 1870.It reads something like this:
