A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE MONACAN PEOPLE
Our People, the Monacans, are one of the oldest groups of indigenous people in Virginia. We have maintained a proud heritage of our ancestors and have struggle defiantly to preserve
our Indian community, often despite inflammatory local racism and deliberate attempts by State Officials to eradicate our identity as Indians.
We are the only State recognized tribe located in the vast area of Virginia, known as the Piedmont, prior to 1607 our territory extended west of Richmond to the James River basin and surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. We are of Eastern Siouan language descent and spoke Tutelo, a language shared by the Tutelo, Saponi, and Occaneechi. We are the only Siouan tribe
still in existence in Virginia. Archaeological evidence indicates that our presence in this region dates back for more than 10,000 years.
For nearly 100 years our community attended and Indian school at Bear Mountain, until 1963 when we were finally
