1900 FEDERAL CENSUS REPORT:Boarder at the home of Mary Larson, age 49, in the village of Arcadia, Trempealeau, Co., WI while attending high school.Another boarder, Clara Carlson, age 20, may have been a cousin, daughter of her father's sister, Anna Johnson Carlson from South Beaver Creek.
MATHILDA PAULINE (JOHNSON) SCHWARTEN
Mathilda Pauline Johnson, daughter of John P. and Berthie (Olson) Johnson, was born May 10, 1883 in Chimney Rock Township, Trempealeau County, Wisconsin(a); died February 8, 1937 in Braham, Isanti County, Minnesota and is buried next to her husband in the Rush Lake German Lutheran Cemetery near Rush City, Minnesota(b,r).
She married John Frederick Schwarten, son of Fritz S. Schwarten and Margaret Boeck, on August 26, 1908 at Brookside Farm, Rush City, Minnesota(c).He was born June 22, 1883, in Nessel Township, Chisago County, Minnesota; died August 20, 1966 in Braham, Minnesota and is buried next to his wife and parents(d).
Mathilda Johnson was baptised June 17, 1883 in the Kongsberg Lutheran Church near her father's home.She was baptised the same day as her father's cousin Ole Johnson's first child, Carl Oscar.Her baptismal sponsors were Ole (cousin of Mathilda's father) and Caroline Johnson and Carl Hendrickson, who was a neighbor of her father(e).She was confirmed in 1899(b), attended school in Olivia, Minnesota in 1898-1899(f,g) and possibly in 1899-1900(h).She was listed as having perfectattendance during the high school session ending December 9, 1898(i).Miss Johnson graduated from the Arcadia, Wisconsin high school on June 13,1901(j,k). She taught school at Franklin, Minnesota for one year and then came to Rush City, Minnesota(b,l).She continued teaching near Rush City until her marriage in 1908.Her parents moved to a farm east of Rush City in the spring of 1902(m,n).
She was married in an outdoor wedding at her father's home east of Rush City.Preparations are noted in the local weekly newspaper(o,p). Her bridesmaids were her sisters Julia and Josephine.The wedding was attended by friends from her former home near Independence, Wisconsin; Osceola, Wisconsin; and Seattle, Washington in addition to local friends(c).
Mr. and Mrs. Schwarten made their home in Osceola, Wisconsin for two years, moved to Seattle, Washington for two years and returned to Braham on March 1, 1912.Her husband operated a general store in partnership with his brother-in-law, Edwin O. Johnson.After Johnson's retirement, Mr. Schwarten operated a Red Owl grocery store until his retirement(d).
Mrs. Schwarten was active in community affairs.She was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran church since 1920 and served as president of the Ladies Aid for three years.She was a past president of the Braham American Legion Auxiliary unit.In the Order of the Eastern Star she had been an officer for many years, being one of the local chapter's earlier Worthy Matrons and having served as its secretary for about ten years(b).
Her husband was baptised in the St. John's Lutheran Church near Rush Lake and attended Danewood school near his home.In 1899 he became employed at the Braham Mercantile Company and worked there several years. Immediately prior to his marriage he was employed at Osceola, Wisconsin. After Mrs. Schwarten's death, he married Mary Lurton of Braham on February 22, 1941.They lived south of Braham until his death.Mary Lurton Schwarten died in Cambridge, Minnesota on September 2, 1983 at the age of 101 years.
Mrs. Schwarten maintained close family ties, visiting frequently at her parents home in Rush City.Various entries in the Rush City Post report her visits to her parental home on holidays.In 1931, she, her mother and brother Edwin returned to her grandfather's home near Melrose, Wisconsin to attend the funeral of her father's sister, Mrs. Mathilda P. (Johnson) Berg(q).In 1934, her sisters Josephine, Mina and Esther and her brothers Edwin, Arthur, William and their
famllies spent Christmas day at her home in Braham(q).
Mathilda Schwarten suffered a paralytic stroke on December 11, 1936.She was cared for at home for a short time and later moved to the Braham hospital.She suffered a second stroke on February 4, 1937 and died four days later(b,r).

LAST RITES FOR BRAHAM RESIDENT
Services Held from Braham Ev. Lutheran Church For Mrs. J. F. Schwarten
Funeral rites were conducted last Friday afternoon, the 12th of February for Mrs. J. F. Schwarten of Braham, who had passed away on Monday evening, February 8th, at the age of 53 years, eight months, and 28 days.
The services were held from the Braham Ev. Lutheran Church at two o'clock, with Dr. A. T. Lindholm in charge.Interment was made in the family lot in the Rush Lake German Lutheran cemetery.A quartette composed of J. A. Johnson, Joe Johnson, W. E. Hanson, and Russel Dahl rendered two numbers, "Abide With Me", and "Lead Kindly Night."Miss Anette Carlson sang, "The Holy City."The accompaniemts were by Miss Helma Bong, who also played the processional music.The active pallbearers were Dr. H. E. Nygren, Oscar Swanson, Oscar A. Olson, William Franden, Leonard Froyen and J. M. Lunnemann.The members of Braham Chapter No. 235 O. E. S. and members of neighboring chapters acted as honorary escort.
Mathilda Pauline Schwarten (nee Johnson) was born on the 10th of May 1883, in Independence Wisc.She was baptised and confirmed from the Independence Norweigan Lutheran Church, and in 1901 graduated from the Arcadia High School. She taught school at Franklin, Minn., for one year and in 1902, the Johnson family moved to Rush City, Minn.She then taught school near Rush City for 6 years and on the 26th of August 1908, was married to J. F. Schwarten of Osceola, Wisc.Here they then made their home for two years, moving to Seattle, Wash.On the lst of March, 1912 the Schwarten family moved to Braham, Minn. where they have since lived.To this union was born two children, one son Leslie and daughter Shirley.
Mrs. Schwarten's health has been poorly for the past few months, and on December 11, 1936 suffered a paralytic stroke from which she never recovered.Left to mourn her early death, is the husband, J.F. Schwarten, and two children, Leslie and Shirley, both of Braham.Also five brothers, Ben and August Johnson of Seattle, Wash., William and Arthur of Rush City, Minn., and Ed O. Johnson of Braham; four sisters, Mrs. Robert Bergquist (Julia) of Moose Lake, Minn, Miss Mina Johnson, of Virigina, Minn., and Misses Josephine and Esther Johnson, of St. Paul, Minn.Also many other relatives and a large circle of friends.

"CONNUBIAL - Johnson-Schwarten-Brookside Farm, the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Johnson was a scene of gaiety and joy on Wednesday, August 26th, 1908, when Mr. J. Fred Schwarten led their accomplished daughter, Miss Matilda Johnson, to the matrimonal altar, where the vows were performed, and the pledges made that launched two happy trusting souls on the placid sea of matrimonial bliss.
The house was beautifully decorated throughout in green and white. The marriage ceremony was performed at two o'clock p. m. by the Rev. William Pease, pastor of the Presbyterian church, under an arch of smilax, supporting a Japanese parasol done in flowers.The bride was attired in cream dotted net, over cream silk and carried bride's roses. She was attended by her sisters, Julia and Josephine as bridesmaids, each attired in dotted Swiss carrying cream roses.The groom wore the conventional black and was attended by George Kloock and John Sievert, as groomsmen, with boutonieres of cream roses.Orphie Bradesen was flower girl and carried sweet peas with little Hazel Kloock carrying the ring on a cream rose.Mrs. A. L. Tubesing, of Red Wing, played Mendelsohn's wedding march.About seventy relatives of the family were present to witness thedelightful ceremony.Immediately after the ceremony the dinner was served in a capacious tent erected on the lawn for that purpose.The waitresses were the Misses Sadie, Mamie and Ada Hughes, Miss Esther Lindberg and Miss Frankie Wallace.
A reception was held in the evening at 8 o'clock where upwards of one hundred and fifty friends wished the happy couple loads of happiness and prosperity.
Mr. and Mrs. Schwarten left on the 1:45 train Thursday morning on a week's bridal trip after which they will be at home at Osceola, Wis.
`The wedding presents were many consisting in part of china, silver, cut glass, art and linen.
The bride had gained high social distinction, among her social acquaintances, all of whom wish her coming years to be fraught with the best there is in life.
Mr. Schwarten is a young man engaged in the Mercantile business and it is a good enough recommendation that miss Matilda consented to become his wife.The Post joins in extending good wishes.
