William H. Melton enlisted in the U.S. Army Union Forces, Civil War, on 23 November 1861 in Co D 24th Regt. Vols at Rolla, MO. for 3 years, under Capt. Vaughn. He said in his application for pension that he was born in Crawford Co., IN. At enlistment he was age 46, 5'10'' tall; fair complexion; blue eyes; dark hair; A farmer. Stationed at Pilot Knob; discharged 12 October 1862, by Lt. Yarborough, Commanding Officer. Also served in Co. G & K 48th Mo Inf, Union Forces. He was at Patterson, Mo. November 1862.

William H. Melton, died 31 October 1900 at Bradleyville, Marion Twp., Taney Co., Mo., and left survivors all over 16 years, eight children, not named in his pension application #410 789, dated 26 July 1890. Cert. #515 860.

Died 31 Oct. 1900, lived in Bradleyville, Marion Township, Taney County, Missouri.In 1898 had eight living children, none of under sixteen years of age, and not listed.Indicated wife was Polly Bilyeu (Mary), but she was apparently deceased at date of application.In was 5' 10" tall, fair complexion, dark air, blue eyes. J. L. Davis and J.C. Brown were Witnesses to signature.Stated that five years previous to enlistmentlived in Christian County, Missouri, P. 0. Ozark. 1866 lived in Miller County, Missouri, Rocktown, P.O..Moved to Brush Creek, Laclede County, Missouri for next five years, following year to Taney County, Missouri, P.O. Forsyth, next year to Douglas County, Missouri, with Forsyth, Taney County, as P. O.

"State of Missouri, County of Douglas: in the matter of William H. Melton Pvt. Co. D, 24th Regt Mo. Vols. On this 23rd day of November A. D. 1885 personally appeared before me as justice of the Peace in and for the aforesaid County and state, duly authorized to administer Oaths, William H.Melton, a resident of Marion Township in the County of Christian in the state of Missouri whose Post Office address is Bradleyville, Taney County, Missouri.Well-known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn, declares in relation to the aforesaid case as follows:' That at the time he received the injury for which he asks a pension, there were only two of his comrades (members of his company) with him viz. Mat Harp and Granville Hazelip, and that they were sense that time killed in an engagement with the enemy.The other comrades that were in the engagement I did not know, or if I did I have forgotten their names.After I was wounded I was permitted to remain in campin my tent and was nursed by Granville Hazelip, and treated by a Dr. Arthur Baker, and that the surgeon Dr. L..H. Baker. I thought Dr. Arthur Baker was employed as a surgeon (or rather as I understood company Dr.).I had been acquainted with Dr. Arthur Baker from my boyhood days and know he is the Dr. that treated me.I am credibly informed by various parties that Dr. Arthur Baker is dead and has been for 10 or twelve years.His cousin John Baker told me in Springfield, Missouri about 12 were thirteen years ago that Dr. Arthur Baker was dead -- that he tended his funeral and helped bury him, that he was buried near Huntsville, Arkansas.If he was not a surgeon or assistant surgeon, I do not know how it came he was authorized to treat me.It may have been because I was an old acquaintance.I am no scholar and do not know what doctor ordered my discharge.It may have been Dr. L. H. Baker that gave the certificate but it was Dr. Arthur Baker that treated me.'He further states that he has furnished all the evidence it is possible to furnish for the reasons given above.

Infantry (Vols after being sworn deposeth and says, he cannot furnish the testimony of his treatment in hospital for the reason he was never in hospital and that Mat Harp and Greenville Hazlip nursed and waited on me while injured, and that he cannot furnish this affidavit for the reason they were both killed and that Dr. Baker treated me in camp, but he cannot furnish his affidavit for the reason he is credibly informed that the said Baker is dead.

State of Missouri; County of Taney SS..." in the matter of William H. Melton.On this 23rd day of December A.D. 18 a five personally appeared before media justice of the Peace...E.C. Brumly, aged 53 years, a resident of Jasper Township, in the County of Taney, and state of Missouri, whose P.O. is Swan, and R. H. Jairet, age 29 years, a resident of Jasper Township in the County of Taney, in the state Missouri, whose P.O. is Swan.... That they have been personally acquainted with the claimant William H. Melton ever sense his returned to his home from the war, in fact he's known him almost from our childhood days.At the close of the war in 1865, he settled down near to us in Miller County, Missouri., and moved about the same time we did to Lacled County, Mo., and about the same date to Christian County, Missouri.So that from 1865 to within two years ago we have been near neighbors.We know from personal knowledge that claimant has been crippled every sense the war.Have often seen him trying to walk and know that he has never been able to perform more than 1/4 manual labor, and in the other words he has not been able to work more than 1/4 his time.We know he has had a bad crippled knee., that is the left knee was and is to date badly injured.And know he is badly injured with rupture.And further we consider him at this date to be disabled to perform manual labor.We have seen him several times recently and know his condition from personal observation."They further state in order to understand about the year 1867 day in claimant moved to Laclede Co, Missouri, and about 1871 or 1872, they moved to Christian County, Missouri, and perhaps the same year they moved into Taney County, Missouri, near the line of two counties, and there during all that time they saw claimant several times a month and often as much as every day.
