Lepore's from the Province of Teramo, ItalyUpdated June 25, 2009
In September 1999 I led a Lepore Family Pilgrimage to Italy to the Abruzzi in the Province of Teramo. There were 29 in the group, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. We were searching for any information on our roots we could find. The following is an account of the success we had on this trip.
We left the Phila. airport on our flight to Rome.
Arriving at the Rome airport we met Guiseppe and Roseanna and boarded the comfortable bus for the Hotel Baltic in Giulianova on the Adriatic Sea.This evening we had a wonderful dinner with Lepore Wine served for everyone.
This morning we went to Civitella del Tronto to research records on our family. We also met with the Mayor who presented us with a plaque commemorating our trip to his town.It was a very emotional meeting. We were thrilled by their welcoming. We also met some Italian cousins. Marco and his mother Lucia Lepore. After the presentation by the Mayor we had a wonderful meal in the Mini Hotel.Piero Lepore provided the music and we had fun time between the Lepore's from America and the Lepore's in Italy.
Afterwards we went on at tour of the fortress, which the Mayor had provided. After the tour of the fortress Antonio and Filomena Lepore invited us to their home for wine.We had a wonderful time with them and their daughters Teresa and Elba.
This morning we went to the St. Pietro's church in Campovalano where my granddad Silvio and his sister Pasqualina Lepore were just before coming to America in 1901 with their parents Giuseppe and Rosa Lepore. This afternoon we went to Campli where the birth records for Silvio and Pasqualina are kept. There we met Edmondo Di Pietro our cousin, the grandson of Pasquale who was the brother of Giuseppe Lepore my great granddad.Edmondo was the previous mayor of Campli for 26 years. The mayor of Campli met with us and presented books and posters of the town of Campli.Afterwards we had refreshments with the Mayor in the square.
This morning we returned to Civitella del Tronto to research more records. This afternoon Edmondo met us at the old Lepore Homestead where Giuseppe,Pasquale and Domenico lived with their parents Luigi and Maddalena Lepore as farmers. Here we met the family still living there and the mother was a Lepore descendant. But we are not sure to the exact place on our family tree.
This day was a relaxing day where we visited Teramo for their open-air market in the morning and did some shopping for gifts to bring home from the area.In the afternoon we went to the Lepore Winery in Colonella.Gaspare Lepore provided a tour of the winery and also a Lepore Wine (see link below) tasting with cheese, bread and Lepore Olive Oil.Afterward Gaspare presented us with a plaque to commemorate our visit. Before dinner this evening many of us went swimming in the Adriatic Sea.This evening we had a cocktail party and then went to dinner. This dinner was our farewell dinner. Our relatives from the area were there for a very fun time.Antonio and his family presented us with their homemade wine.Piero and his sister Ylenia sang and played the keyboard.Dancing, great food and all the Lepore wine we could drink may a wonderful time. The Hotel Baltic provided translators for each table and mixed up our seating so Italian and American Lepore's were sitting together. The Hotel Baltic presented us with photos from Edmondo family. It was a very touching evening.
The Hotel Baltic Owner Massimo truly went out of their way to make this whole trip memorable. It was the "Trip of a Lifetime" that we will never forget.
