James Greer arrivedin Maryland in the fall of 1674 as one of 90 indentured servantson the ship BATCHELOR of BRISTOLL. 5. To encourageimmigration, each new settler to Maryland was allotted 50 acresof land. 6. On 2 November 1764, merchant Samuel Gibbons ofBristol, England claimed and received rights to 4500 acres ofland for reimbursement for transporting these 90 people andimmediately sold the rights to Robert Ridgely of St. Mary'sCounty who a few days later sold some of it to Charles Calvert,who was the government official who had approved Gibbons claim.7. This Charles Calvert is probably the third Lord Baltimore,governor of Maryland Colony at the time. 8. WILL OF ARTHURTAYLOR...Father of Anne Taylor Greer June 6, 1687. To allChristian People, to whom these presents shall come....I, ArthurTaylor, of Gunpowder River, in Baltimore County, Maryland,Planter, for and in consideration of natural love and affectionwhich I have and do bear unto James Grear and Ann, his wife, asaosl for divers and other good reasons and considerations andhereunto expecially moving and do by these presents, give,grant, alein, enfoff their heirs and assigns, unto James Grearand Ann, his wife, their heirs and assigns forever, 75 acres ofland, being part of a greater tract of 300 acres belonging tothe said Arthur, and called, "Arthur's Choice,"lying and beingsituated in Baltimore County, and on the south side of a branchof the Gunpowder River, called Bird Run, beginning at a red oakstanding on the said river and running from said oak boundingwith the ... run...east-north-east 53 perches by a line into thewoods for length 300 --- thence by a line down west-south-westfrom the end south-south-east...east to line 53perches...Witness: Samuel Sickelman, Amos Thompson---SignedArthur Taylor (his mark) (Hall of Records, Annapolis, Maryland,R.M. #H S., Vol. 1, page 261) This same land was held in trustfor the "orphan of James Greer named John" until he reached age.Neither James Greer or his wife Ann left a will that has beenlocated. 9. James Greer was born circa 1627 in Dumfrieshire,Scotland. He was the son of Sir James Grier and Mary Brown. 10.He immigrated to Maryland in 1650 on the good shit "Batchlor."11. In circa 1681 he married Ann Taylor who was born in 1660,the daughter of Arthur and Margaret Taylor. 12. ArthurImmigrated to Maryland with his father John Taylor in 1659.13. On June 6, 1687 Taylor conveyed 75 acres known as Arthur'sChoice to James and Ann Greer. 14. Ann married a secondtime to Laurance Richardson and a third time to Oliver Harriott.15. James died in circa 1688. 16. James Greer, transportedNovember 2, 1675, by Samuel Gibbons, who proved his right untofour thousand five hundred acres of land due him fortransporting ninth persons, herein mentioned into the Provinceto inhabit. Before Me...Charles Calvert." 17. Later ArthurTaylor transfers which concerned this portion of Arthur's Choiceshow 75 acres owned by James Grear, and his wife, Ann came intothe possession of Lawrence RIchardson as "custodian for yeOrphans of James Grear and now in possesion of Oliver Harriott."Since the plural Orphans was used, it is believed there mighthave been another son. TOrrence states that perhaps the Josephwho died in Prince George County, Maryland and had a will dated8 August 1715. But a more recent researcher has shown thatJoseph was born before James married Sarah Day. 18. It isbelieved that James Grear died without a will, and his wife, AnnGrear, married as her second husband Lawrence Richardson. Shewas the wife of Lawrence Richardson at the time he held in tructthe 75 acres of Arthur's Choice for John, ye orphan, son ofJames Greer. She was the wife of Oliver Harriot at the time heheld them in custody, and she was still living the 14 March 1714when John and Sarah Day Greer sold the land to Mark Guisard.
