Richard servedin Robert Caldwell's Company of Second Regiment, South Carolina Militia, during the War of 1812. He enlisted January 4, 1815, at John's Island, near Charleston, as substitute for James Hogg. He was discharged March 7, 1815 at Charleston.
Richard purchased a number of items from his father's estate but died before the 1840 census was taken. Excerpts from the sale bill of Robert Leatham on 25 Aug 1829 for purchases made by Richard Leathem show: 1 box of lumber .27 cents; 1 large pot .37 1/2 cents; wheat by the bushel $1.02, $4.59; rye by the bushel .50 cents, 11 bushels $5.50; 1 hand mill 12 1/2 cents; plank by the 100 feet .28 cents, $1.00; 1 lot tin ware, etc. $1.12 1/2; cooper ware .75 cents; musket and gun barrel .62 1/2 cents; shaving utensils and tin pans $2.00; 1 candlestick and mould, etc., needle .15 cents; 1 frow, 2 smith hammers $1.34; 3 chairs .06 1/4; hogs (2nd choice 4 in number) $2.84; still $15.00; 1 lot of wool .52 cents; 6 goats $3.35.
Since Robert owned a still and raised wheat and rye, one may assume he made whiskey. After all, it was used as medicine at that time.

In 1840 census: Richard has died but Harriet in in the 40-50 age group. She has 2 sons 5-10 (b. 1830-35); 2 sons 15-20 (b. 1820-25); 2 sons 20-30 (b. 1810-1820); and 1 dau 10-15 (b. bet. 1825-1830).
Census records are not always accurate and are sometime nonexistant. Thus the makeup of this family is so far rather dim.[lucas.GED]
