Salisbury area Luxtons of Wiltshire
I was born Joan Luxton, daughter of John (Jack) Luxton, born in Salisbury, Wiltshire in 1901.His great grandfather Charles Luxton settled in Salisbury in the early 1800's.The family legend tells us that his reason for doing so, was to escape from the Press Gang that was operating at the time around Tavistock. He apparently hid in a hay cart going to Salisbury. He was a Whitesmith by trade, and practised this during his working life in Salisbury. My family tree covers many of his descendants, who initially lived in the Salisbury area. He was definitely born in Devonshire,I believe near Winkleigh, as I cannot find any other Charles born in Devon between 1775-80. I have been searching for identifying evidence of him being born in North Tawton, the son of Peter Luxton who was a miller by trade. If anyone can substantiate this in any way, or give me any additional information about him, I should be very grateful. I will naturally share any information that I have. | Salisbury area Luxtons of Wiltshire Updated November 29, 2009 |
