THE CRA(I)GHEAD FAMILY;;
Va. - Mo.
JOHN (2) CRAGHEAD - SALLY POWELL FAMILIES OF VA.
"John Craghead was one of the executors of his father's estate and fell heir to the home in which he was then living on Staunton River. He is said to have spent his entire life in the county of his birth, Franklin. There, he first appears on the tax lists in 1795, and his first acreage is given as 341 A. on Staunton river. From 1809 to 1826 he is listed as owner of 550 A. of land.
The Craghead home was one mile from Staunton (Roanoke) River, which separates Franklin from Bedford County. The house was built during slavery time, of brick made on the farm, and is said to be still in fair condition. The four wide "walkways" leading from the house are also of brick, and are lined with beautiful native boxwoods. John had several slaves. [sic]
Sally (Powell) Craghead had the distinction of living to the ripe old age of 102 years, and her husband lived long enough to celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary. Both are buried on the Craghead Plantation in Franklin Co. -- Scruggs, Virginia. The markers at each of their graves are thought to be good marble, while others buried there have what is believed to be native stone.
The list of children given below was taken from Hill's "History of Henry Co., Va.", and were [sic] originally furnished to us by Dr. Wingfield, but reconstructed by us from information sent by descendants of some of their respective families. Correct order of births is unknown.
