His sixth-great grandfather, John Maggard, was of Germanic origin, born Hans Magert in 1690.Samuel Maggard, one of his two sons - (the other was David Maggard) - moved into the region of now Letcher County, Kentucky, in the 1730's and then into Leslie County in the 1770's.A book by Leslie County educator and attorney, Hays Lewis, Entangled Roots (1990; Kentucky Imprints: Berea, Ky.) outlines several Maggard-family connections.|
