|Our branch of the family tree, began with Robert and Mary Bane. They originally settled in Big Spring, PA about 1777. Later they moved near Wheeling, WV. They are buried in "Old Tent Cemetery", in Ohio County, three miles from the entrance to Oglebay Park, WV.|
Robert b. Kildavee , South End of Argyll Co., Scotland. He married Mary Bane before leaving and they migrated to America in 1777. After the Rev. War, they moved to Ohio Co., Virginia (now WV). Rbt. d. Aug. 17, 1821 at the age of 86. Mary d. Aug. 4, 1821, at the age of 79. They had six children: (1) Daniel 1769-1852; (2) Jean 1770-1849; (3) John 1772-1856; (4) Margaret 1777-1858; (5) George 1779-1839; (6) Elizabeth 1784-1847.
The Old Tent Cemetery, which sits on slightly higher ground than the road and consists of approximately one acre of land, is located on the right side of Peter's Run Road. The early settlers of Peter's Run emigrated to this area around the time of the Revolutionary War and the early settling of Wheeling, VA. They were mainly of Scotch-Irish descent and followed the Presbyterian faith. Ref. Records of Interment "the old Tent Cemetery" by Audra Rickey Wayne, 1989.
Additional family members are buried at "High Ridge Cemetery". This is 14.5 miles west, in Belmont County, OH, near St. Clairsville, on RT 214, in Pultney Twp. The house of worship at High Ridge was a small brick building, built in 1824-25. The date of the deed conveying the property from John and Wm. Feeley to Christopher Hinkle, Rbt. Alexander, and George Giffen was Dec. 7, 1825. George and William Giffen both served as Elders of the church. Photos of various tombstones are posted at the virtual cemetery.
The major original source, of the family history, is the "Giffen Gegealogic Family History" written by Rev. J. W. Giffen, DD, Cleveland, OH, 1927. Additional information is available from the "Centenial History of Belmont County", by McKelvey. I want to contact additional family members and post new information regarding the family's history. Any information would be appreciated. I am also willing to share the information that I have.
