|"It is called "Mainstay" because that's where the Mains stay!" said Ruedella Mains wife of Arthur Mains of their long held cottage in Canada outside of Hamilton.|
This place like theirs is intended to be a comfortable place for relatives and friends to come and enjoy sharing information about old times.
So welcome to my genealogical search effort.
My search centers around the Mains/Means names, their history and origin as Scottish names, and for the ancestors, descendants and history related to my great grandfather Robert Mains of Ontario, CANADA who married Alice Manning in 1887.
Robert was born in Camu, Tyrone county in Northern Ireland in 1861. His parents were Alexander Means and Mary Jane Orr and he had at least two sisters Margaret and Susan. Apparently in Ireland they were all named Means and they all changed to Mains when they emigrated.
Alice Manning was the daughter of John Manning and Sarah Siggins who were married in 1852 in Toronto, Ontario, CANADA. John and Sarah had a large family and lived much of their life on a farm in Parkhill Ontario. Later they moved to Kelso, Saskatchewan.
Alexander Means was the son of Robert Means of whom I know very little.Mary Jane Orr was the daughter of John Orr and Eliza Black
Robert Means (the son of Alexander) came to Canada and became Robert Mains when he was 17-20 (approx. 1878-1881). He settled in the Toronto, Ontario area. The story goes he came alone but it seems he may have come with his father Alexander Means, his mother Mary Jane Means and his two sisters Margaret Means and Susan Means as his parents and two sisters also emigrated to Toronto at or near the same time.
Other Mains emigrating to Canada/US came from Fermanagh and Tyrone counties. I would appreciate any information on Mains/Means in Ireland especially those related to Alexander Mains/Means from Tyrone county and his father Robert Means.
So in addition to Mains/Means my relatives and research will also touch on the names Manning (Canada/England), Norrad (New Brunswick/Holland), Burke (Boston/Ireland), Siggins (Ontario/Ireland), Kelly (Ireland), Lay (US West), Hodgson (California), Stinson (Ontario) and Seery (Boston) as well as others.
I would appreciate hearing from those with similar interests, especially other Mains/Means or folks knowledgeable about the name's origins.Of course if I know you I would like to hear from you as well.
Any Mains/Means, especially Mains/Means family researchers should check out the Mains Family page and sign the guestbook.
