Paul L. McGowen, Former civic leader
Paul L. McGowen, 70, of 391 Morse St., Coldwater, died Sunday, February 11, 1989 at the Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Fla. after a short illness.
Mr. McGowen was born May 1, 1918 in Lawrence, the son of Clayton and Bernice (Slocum) McGowen. On June 24, 1939 he married Dollie Knowles in Coldwater. For 45 years they made their home in Lawrence until moving to Coldwater five years ago, spending the summers in Coldwater and winters in Mims, Fla.
Mr. McGowen was a civic leader in the Lawrence area, serving five years as the Financial Secretary of the Lawrence Village Council, and nearly five years on the Board of Directors of the American National Bank and Trust of South Haven, and many years on the Lawrence Public Shcool's Board of Education.
In his early years, he worked for the Production Credit Associaton and later for the Federal Land Bank serving Berrien and Van Buren Counties, until his retirement 15 years ago. He then built and operated a trailerpark, laundromat and several car washes in the Lawrence and Kalamazoo area.
Surviving are his wife, Dollie; a son and daughter-in-law., Gordon and Judy McGowen of Kalamazoo; a daughter and son-in-law, Stephen and Sandra Hall of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren; his mother, Bernice Totman; a sister, Ruth Ray of Kalamazoo.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 m Thursday at the Bronson Cemetary in Bronson, with the Rev. David Fox of the First Baptist Church officiating.
Friends may call at the Dutcher Funeral Home from 7-9 pm today and 9am to 12 noon on Thursday.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
