|The McDonalds of Manayunk and Roxborough, Philadelphia, PA are the descendants of Charles McDonald who emmigrated from Ireland in between 1854 to 1856, the post famine years. Charles shortly went to work for a paper mill, of which there were many in Manayunk along the banks of the Schyukill River. He and his wife, Bridget Mohan, brought with them their 4 children: Kate, Hugh, Susan and newborn Charles. 3 additional children were born inAmerica: William, Mary and Emma. |
My name is Mike McDonald and I'm descended through the middle child, Charles. I began my research in January, 2000 as a gift to my father, James, an amateur historian who instilled in me a love of the past. I've come a long way in a short time and each new fact I uncover fuels my enthusiasm and delights my father.
My ancestor, Charles' connections to Ireland are presently eluding me. Where was he born? The only place name I can find is Armagh. Why did he leave Ireland? How did he get here?
I'm creating this Home Page with the hope of finding some McDonald relatives that share my interest and might have more information. My father is an only child and I've never met a McDonald Aunt, Uncle or Cousin.
I have uncovered Charles and Bridget's final resting place. It's an unmarked grave in a nearby cemetary. Together with my family, I hope to place a monument there soon to the founders of our line in America.
