|My name is Bryan McKown, and I am a native and lifelong resident of South Carolina. I am seeking genealogical information on both the descendants and antecedents of William McKown (c.1738-1831), the progenitor of our family in South Carolina.|
William McKown appears in what is now Cherokee County, SC, in the late 1760s and eventually settles at the Ninety-nine Island area of the Broad River. The community where our family settled is today known locally as McKown's Mountain. William served in Col. Thomas Brandon's regiment of Whig militia during the Revolutionary War. His brother, George McKown (?-1781) was evidently a Loyalist. My presumption is that our family moved into South Carolina from NC and VA (and perhaps Pennsylvania) via the Wagon Road.
William sired a large family at least one of whom migrated to Mississippi in the 1830's. Descendants of this line later established themselves in Texas and Oklahoma.
I have done extensive research in primary sources on the McKowns and the following Cherokee County families: Lockhart, Patrick, Macomson, and Service. I welcome reciprocal exchanges of information.
