|My name is Donna M. Mckinnon. I recently got involved in doing scrapbooking. This has opened up a world of curiosity in knowing more about my family and my family ties. I wanted my children to understand who they were and where they came from. I didn’t realize that this was going to be such a complicated journey. However, I think that there is a little detective in each of us yearning to get out. |
I started speaking with my entire immediate family member to get a better picture of their families. I wanted to know about children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents. I opened up a large can of beans and I was making my way to the seed. I was looking for the master farmer, the one who created the can of beans. Shortly into the journey I realized that my husbanded didn’t have much information either so I started down his tree. When I run into a block I go back to another branch of my tree so that I don’t get bored or frustrated.
Being a African American it gets very difficult. Especially since I am new to this, I run into a lot of blocks. Usually people just don't know. Many black families centries ago didn’t have the skills to write or document what was happening in the families so it just became forgotten or small stories to pass on. I am about to join the Central Florida Genealogy Society so that I can become more informed on how to search. I am not going to give up. There has got to be a way to uncover where I came from. Well actually I know who my great great great great …. Grandparents are (Adam and Eve). I even know that they lived in a garden. I just need to file in the blanks.
