Captain James Stinson (b. December 10, 1754, d. May 24, 1845)James Stinson (son of John Stephenson) was born December 10, 1754 in Lancaster, Lancaster Co., Penn., and died May 24, 1845 in Milton, Wayne Co., Indiana.He married Mary Gist, daughter of Benjamin Gist and Mary Jarrett.

James Stinson , also known as James Stevenson, was a soldier in the American Revolution. He was born on December 10, 1754 in Lancaster, Penn.
A copy of his military record is on deposit with the G.A.R. post at Cambridge City, Wayne County, Ind.
His name appears in many official records as both Stinson and Stevenson and in some cases Stephenson. By the name of Stinson he was appointed Register of Deeds in 1793 and again in 1798, and by this name owned town lots in Greenville, Greene County, Tenn.
His first military service was on June 15,1776 when he volunteered with the Rangers, North Carolina Troops. His last tour of duty was as a Captain of Rangers From April, 1781 until after the surrender of Cornwallis, and he served until the last of Dec. 1781. On October 4, 1796 he was commissioned captain of cavalry of Washington District, Tennessee by Governor John Sevier.
He was pentioned December 29, 1832 at 439.99 per month.
After the war James lived in Tennessee until about 1822 at this time he moved to Wayne County Ind. where he lived until his death on May 24, 1845.
It has been discovered that the probable reason for the change from Stevenson to Stinson is; Scotish people pronounced it Steenson and it became Americanized to Stinson.
