Notes for Alphonse Richard Rode:
My father was a kind, hard working man but poorly educated.Extremely conservative and cautious and absolutely refused to go into debt to buy a house. He was invariably kind to childrenand rarely struck any of us. Generally I would say he had low self esteem. He worked as a driver for the Sanitation Dept. in NYC into his fifties. At that time he had some sort of argument with management and quit, loosing his pension. He had difficulty finding work at that age and he became depressed because of his inability to support his family. He did not have a high opinion of advanced education, though I believe he was pleased when my brother and I went to College. He loved to drive, and was forever tinkering with his cars.Aside from smoking he had no apparent vices, never attended church, rarely read books, and had no hobbies.Much of this may be explained by his need to work long hours to support a family of five children. His attitudes were authoritarian, almost "old country", and his prejudices not overt, but he knew that certain people acted certain ways.....he was also convinced that wrestling was on the Up-and-Up.In his younger days he was a LifeGuard and he always loved the beach and swimming. We would spend much of Saturday or Sunday at the Pool or Beach, with me invariably getting a sunburn...... I hated the beach. Occasionally we would go to Coney Island where he loved to go on the Cyclone .... I was terrified of the Cyclone. One summer when I was 5-6 years old Pop and I drove to NovaScotia to visit Mom's relatives... I really don't know why noone else went, especially Mom.We had a great time.On the way up one evening in Maine he let me have as much IceCream as I wanted.......I got very sick (short term stomach problem). We visited with Aunt Clara in Mulgrave and I fell in love with my older cousins, particularly Nora.We went down and looked at the ferries that went over to Cape Breton (this was before the causeway was built) and generally had a lot of fun visiting around. We then went to Halifax and my Uncle Hugh, who was an engineer, took me down to the train yards and showed me all around. On our way back Pop bought a bucket of salted Herrings.I guess they were improperly salted because they were rotten by the time we got back to Staten Island.
