The family of Benjamin Leecraft lived in Bermuda, and various other islands in the late 1700's. The family owned a fleet of ships used in commerical shipping. Eventually the family moved to the American colonies. Two brothers settled in New York City, one in Beaufort, South Carolina, and one, Benjamin, in Beaufort, North Carolina. He came with his own ship and became one of the largest land-owners in the province.
Benjamin fought in the American Revolution and was killed in a sea battle in 1799.The family remained in North Carolina and prospered, marrying into the Bell and Fisher families. In 1861 Benjamin's grandson, Benjamin Leecraft, III, was a captain inCo. G, 36 Regt. North Carolina Volunteer. At the end of the Civil War Benjamin, III moved his family to the Indian Territory [Oklahoma]. By 1880 no one by the name of Leecraft was left in Carteret Co. North Carolina.
I am looking for any information on the Leecraft family and also the Stowe family.Susan Elizabeth Stowe married Benjamin Leecraft, III in 1866 in South Carolina. She was the daughter of Dr. Samuel Neel Stowe and Mary Margaret Elizabeth Holland.
