Dear Daughter Ross:
Your last letter came to hand in due time and I was very glad to hear
something of Bro. Shelton and his work in Washington.
I know very little about our family tree.I am sure Janie Caldwell can
tell you more than I can in reference to your Grandmother Caldwell.Your Great
Grandmother was named Grace (sir name) and she married a man named McAdams and
your grandmother Caldwell and her sister Mrs. Bryant Holmes were the children.
I am not sure there were any others. After McAdams died she married McWirter,
and your half-uncle, John McWhirter, was the only child. He has been dead for
a long time.
John Martin Eichelberger (Eaglebarger) was born at Ittingen, Germany about
1784.He had 9 brothers. He came to America about 1800 and settledat Savana,
GA. He manufactured guns, cow bells and other implements as factories were not
in existance at that time as they are at the present time. The factory where
he worked was owned by Frederick I. Gray.Ten years after he arrieved in
America he married Unity Carlin as Irish lady and daughter of Thomas Carlin who
came to this country from Carickfergus County Antrim, Ireland about 1774.He
(Carlin) married a Miss elisabeth Evans of Virginia.A brother of Unity
Carlin, Thomas Carlin, was governor of Illinois from 1839 to 1843.Gov. Carlin
had a son, Wm. H. Carlin, who was a Major of volunteers in the Mexican War.
Your Great Grand
county and owned a plantation on Plattin creek known as the Wilcox place where
he lived and died and lies in a grave yard somewhere on that plantation. He
had four daughters and one son, your grandfather. One sister of father,
Elizabeth, married John Joseph Lynch and at his death married Isaac rutledge
about 1825.After Rutledge died she married John Ackley who meandered to
California during the fold rush and never was heard of after he left.Mary
married Henry Skaggs in 1835 and was the mother of Cousin Skaggs and several
other children.Louisa married William Strickland and had no children.Susan
married to Henry A. Preston in 1846 and had two sons and died in 1848 nine days
after the second son was born.Your Grandfather, Frederick C. Eaglebarger was
born about 1824 and married Mary Jane McCormack who was raised in Jefferson
Conty, Mo. I do not know her father's name but I remember she had several
brothers, James, Peter, Marion, and Con. (must have been Constantine). She was
related to several families of McCormacks in Jefferson County, Mo. Some of them
later moved to Farmington, Mo I think St. Genevieve County.I do not know the
date of the marriage of my mother and father, but my mother died Sept. 9, 1887.
Father died in November 1895.He was buried in an old grave yard in the city
of Paris, Tex. (Frederick C. Eaglebarger moved from Missouri to a farm near
Paris, Texas, when his son, Perry Ross Eaglebarger, was about 14 years old.) My
brothers were James F., Charles L., John M. and Theadore. I had a sister who
died of whooping cough before I was born and I do not remember her name.Mary
A. lived to be about 30 years of age and married a man named Lee.This is all
I know about the kinfolks.
With love - Your father
