Welcome to McFate/McFeat/McPhate/McPheatFamily Home PageUpdated March 11, 2006

This family page represents the efforts of several serious McFate researchers. The largest portion of this data was assembled by William Moore, Frank J. McFate and Margaret McFate who published some of the descendants of Robert McFate in a 1982 genealogy printed by Crawford County PA Genealogy group. It was based on (1) an 1888 McFate History written by Robert W. McFate which traced the line of Robert McFate through his son, Joseph and (2) a chart maintained over the years in the possession of Frank McFate and (3) much original research conducted by William Moore, Mary Belle McFate Davis and others.Several McFate lines were not included at all in this 1982 publication, including (1) a line descending from John McFate, and his brother, James -- the "Iowa-Illinois" branch, which has been researched by Marlene McFate Burkheimer (2) a line descending from Thomas McFate (McPhate) of Jefferson & Adams County, Mississippi (1810 to present) which has been researched by John McPhate, (3) the "Michigan-Wyoming-Washington" branch uncovered by Marlene Burkheimer & John McPhate in their mailings to several sources and (4) the New Brunswick branch also uncovered by John McPhate email@example.com.Still not included in this data are several McFate families in the Philadelphia area that need work.Louise Porter's book on James McLean McFate has provided much research and history on his line. Not all of these branches have been connected to the tree but we feel that they are all related. We are indebted to these researchers, especially to those who laid the foundation with the early histories and charts.
The earliest record of McFate/McPhate appears in Scotland, and there are still McPhates/McPheats living in Scotland today. At least one of these early families ventured across the sea to settle in Donegal County, Ireland, near Londonderry. Records are found as far back as 1760's in the Presbyterian Churches of the region, especially in the town of Drumherrive. According to the 1888 McFate History, a Robert McFate had at least three sons- John, Joseph and James- and they form the basis of the American lines. Their descendants pushed the edge of the American frontier -appearing in western Pennsylvania when it was still wilderness (1796), in Michigan (----), Iowa (1846), Illinois (1846), Mississippi (1816) and Utah (1860). The history includes famers, lawyers, teachers, laborers, miners, drovers, seamstresses, ministers, peace officers, mill builders, and business owners. They fought in every major war although we have not found a record of a McFate/McPhate in the Revolutionary War.
We have been working on putting the McFeat/McPheat information on the page. Hope you new to the Clan can help fill it in. Check back as we try to update the report once a month.
