John was my great grand father and emigrated to New Zealand in the 1880's He Married Catherine Sloane in Dunedin NZ. In 1885.
My grand father John Herbert being born 1/2/1886 in Dunedin.
John Herbert James Sailed on the Steamer TAIAROA from Wellington on April 11 1886 on her usual run to Lyttleton,Akaroa and Dunedin. The ship departed Wellington into a strong Southerly Gale and heavy rain. The ship ran aground that night 11th. April 1886 at WAIPAPA POINTon the Kaikoura coast, with a loss of life of 34 souls. John was one of the 9 bodies found and is burried at WoodBank Station on the 16th. April 1886.
With the Loss of John all details of his family was lost. his Marriage certificate lists his father as Donald McPhee of TORONTO CANADA. His mother as Margaret McPhee (Grant)he was born (circa 1859)We do not have any knowledge of siblings or whence they came. We believe the family were connected to boat and shipbuilding in Canada, Nova Scotia, and Scotland.
