|I am researching the McSWEEGAN FAMILY of Hartford, Connecticut.|
In my research I have found the name McSweegan spelled several ways: McSwiggin, McSwiggen, McSwigan and McSwegan. From about 1860 to the present day it is spelled;McSweegan.
The family is Irish and came to the United States from Ireland, in the late 1840's. John McSwigan arrived in New York City in 1846. He moved to Tarrifville, Connecticut. John's mother Mary and father Patrick McSwiggin with his brother James and Sister Rosann arrived in Tarrifville, Connecticut sick from their journey and died in September 1847.They all are buried in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Tarrifville, Connecticut
One of my research problems is to find out where in Ireland they came from.Any of the documents that I have always show Ireland or Irish for Country of Origin or Nationality. There is a great chance that the family originated in Co. Tyrone around Plumbridge/Goshen area.
My great grandfather, John McSwigan declared his intention to become a citizen at the Marine Court of New York City on February 2, 1846.I would like to know more about this Court and where any of their documents are located.
My Grandfather was David Francis McSweegan, born December 1, 1860, died October 4, 1923.David lived in Hartford, Connecticut all his life and was a retired Hartford Fireman. He suffered smoke damage to his lungs and was sick for several years.
My Father was John David McSweegan, Sr.He was a police Lt. on the Hartford Connecticut Police Department.Dad passed away September 29, 1947.
I have had several emails concerning the McSweegan Family.Thank youto all who have contacted me. If there is anyone else who can be of assistance, please contact me at the above email address.
