It is our goal to show how life in America was led by real people in Our Family's 300 years on American soil. We call that history: Among the First to Come and the First to Serve. To that end I have written about Henry Pickett (the Physician and Cuper), John Pickett (landowner, Sheriff and sponsor), William Pickett (the Lawyer), The "Fighting Picketts" (Lt. Col. Martin, Capt. William, Lt. George Pickett, among others), The First Baptists of Virginia (John and Reuben Pickett), The Role of the Sheriff and constable in Colonial Times (James Pickett of North Carolina and his sons James and William). Although my major work began with Micajah Pickett of North and South Carolina, I have consider other Picketts, of importance. Currently my work is centered around the 200 year history of my family in Yazoo County Mississippi. Our family also settled in Amitie, Bolivar, and Franklin counties. And, we help to found Shreveport. LA. Later, after WW1, my grandfather moved to V'berg. After WWII my father was stationed and lived in Rochester, N.Y. All but my father are buried in MS, mostly in the Yazoo family cemetery, which is now being indexed. I could not resist the studies of General George E. Pickett. CSA. I must explain that many of these papers were written Prior to my service in Vietnam and I discussed many points with Col. George IV, my protector and mentor at ROTC and in the army. Just the fact that I was a Pickett gained respect for me among many officers. Other cousins are being explored, especially in the South. This work is not fully mine. My father started and had Mr. Banks, a well known genealogist, work on the family history. Other branches joined in. My cousin "Kitty" has been my major supporter, as well as others. We hope other Picketts will join to complete the task. I have but touched upon the Pilgrim and New Amsterdam origins of many of the "Pickett wives" and have ignored my wife's Native and Jewish ancestry.(Bledsoes, Shelbys, Harts, Schonmackers and Deckers) |
