Born in France, Jeanne Baptiste Chevalier married Jacques Dessery and immigrated to the prairie in Illinois. Widowed in the 1860s she went with her family to Tonganoxie, Kansas. When her pioneer home dug into a Kansas hillside was invaded by Indians she chased them away with a kettle of boiling water! Her gravestone in Tonganoxie matches that of her husband in L'Erable, Illinois.

Edward Gierke farmed 80 acres in northwest corner of Section 27 T29N R13W Chebanse Township,Iroquois County, Illinois. Address was Rt. 1, Clifton. He farmed until he was in his 80s. He "batched" on this farm, then married Ida Genschaw and raised four sons, Edmund, Walter, Elden and Vernon here.

Fred and Mary Strahl, pictured here, bought this house in Clifton, Illinois (northwest corner of 4th Ave & 1st St)in 1913 for $1,300. House was built in 1896; in 2003 it is the site of Iroquois Federal Savings. Mary Strahl handed out cookies here to children coming from school.

Her casket, probably made by grandson Henry Meier was buried in Milks Grove cemetery, Iroquois County, Illinois and marked by a wooden cross.
