Benjamin Arthur Melton 2385 E. Clubview Yazoo City,MS 39194 746-2375 | I have information starting with Jesse C. Melton b.1808 (NC) and his descendents after Jesse's arrival in Holmes County Mississippi in 1846. The oldest tombstone in the Melton cemetery is Susannah Melton b.1785. Jesse's wife was Anne Theresa Duren b.1819 (SC). Associated families are MELTON, DUREN, GAYDEN, HAMPTON, WINBORN, DOWNER, CADE, SMITH, TURNER, FARR, AMMONS, ANDERSON, CATRON, STARKE, WALTON, and others. Emory community is now nearly extinct except for two churches and a few families of the above mentioned. The town was incorporated in 1839 along with the Methodist Episcopal Church and a girls' school. Emory is near the Holmes and Carroll County line in the central part of Mississippi. Other nearby towns are Lexington, Durant, Vaiden, and Black Hawk. |
