John P. Young and his wife, Leah Sykes Young, from Sebrell in Southampton County, Virginia, were the parents of 14 children. They were the subjects of an article by Richard C. Davids, published in the 1951 issue of Farm Journal, entitled "Sixteen Sticks in a Bundle". The story was produced on Dupont's Cavalcade of America radio program and condensed in the April 1952 issue of Reader's Digest.
