He served a 153 days as a Revolutionary Soldier in South Carolina Militia in Colonel Harden's Company, certified by Lt. Baxton.On 26 August 1791, Richard asked the Treasurer to deliver his indents to John Preasley, acknowledged before John Chisolm, J.P.. Signed: Maj. Kirkland.
More than 137 battles of different sizes were fought in South Carolina during the Revolution but the British were defeated at Kings Mountain 07 October 1780, and at the Battle of Cowpens 17 Jan. 1781 and driven from South Carolina to Virginia.
Council minutes record Petition of his father, Richard Kirkland, for 350 acres for family rights.He stated "he came into this country from up Northward and purchased some negroes."His petition was granted 05 May 1752.

Notes for Issac Kirkland: He is mentioned in claim file by Pvt. in SC Militia: ISAAC KIRKLAND says he served before and after the reduction of Charles Town.He also provided provisions for militia use in October 1779 under Col. Anderson.On 28 December 1782, ISAAC KIRKLAND & MOSES KIRKLAND, SR., swore before the court that MOSES took and carried off a negro fellow slave to the value of 700 pounds.ISAAC then made petition to the General Assembly stating "there is two Negro boys of the property of MOSES KIRKLAND left in said state plundered & concealed by force for the use of R. KIRKLAND and as I am both hero and loser, I hope your Honor will make me a lawful rite to said Negros which would be a discharge for the above account.So, no more but desiring an answer if you please from an unworthy friend." 18 November 1747, "Richard Braswell, Sr., of Edgecombe County "gives to my son William Braswell,the son of Anne Carver commonly known by the name of William Braswell ... a plantation at White Oak Swamp, whereon my Negro Jack now lives on Edgecombe County ... 300 acres.Also ten Negroes...Also one bed and furniture, one iron pot, one gray mare and colt and Negro child name Isaac."To his son Robert Braswell-Carver, "the plantation whereon I now live and all the land belonging to the same in Edgecombe County containing 444 acres, all the houses, etc.., nine Negroes, one still...".To his son David Braswell-Carver..."plantation at Maple Swamp in Edgecombe County, 200 acres, all cattle, nine Negroes, one feathered bed and furniture, one mare, iron pot (sic), hoggs (sic) marked with a crop, and two slits to the right ear."To his daughter, Sarah Braswell-Carver, "one Negro girl, one Negro boy named Peter, one feather bed and furniture, one iron pott (sic), six spoons, six cows with calf, six pewter dishes."
Richard Braswell, Sr., of Edgecombe County, NC on November 18, 1747 conveyed 5 sterling to "Robert born of the body of Anne Carver and commonly known by the name of Robert Braswell" and for "the natural love and affection I have and bear to the said Robert Braswell nine slaves, one still and the plantation in Edgecombe County, 444 acres.He also made similar deeds to his other children "William the son of Anne Carver commonly known by the name of Wm Braswell, David Braswell and Sarah Braswell."Richard Braswell, died prior to November 29, 1758 when letters of administration on his estate which had been granted to Benjamin Willis were revoked, and letters ad colligend issued to Anne Carver appear to have been married at some point, as a deed dated October 03, 1775, from Isom Carver and his wife, Elizabeth of Cumberland Co., NC to George Mylne and Robert Hogg, for 100 pounds, land on Cape Fear River, being land conveyed at Robert Carver by Richard Braswell, and Ann his wife, June 16, 1753 and by said Robert Carver to his son Isom by will November 11, 1766.The administration bond on the estate of David Braswell, shows Anne Braswell, widow, as administratrix with Robert Carver and William Carver as securities, December 02, 1758.Robert Carver 'Alias Braswell' of Bladen Co., NC sold for 125 pounds of Virginia money to Wm Bryant of Edgecombe Co., NC, 4455 acres west of Fishing Creek and Crooked Branch, granted to Richard Braswell, on February 24, 1728."
