Notes for Mathew MICHEL:
Mathew Michel was born on 28 May 1895 on the Michel farm outside Springbrook, Iowa, to Sebastian and Anna Michel (Deichelbohrer). Mathew was the youngest of six children and attended Saints Peter and Paul Catholic grade school in Springbrook, Iowa. After graduation, he worked on the family farm and later purchased the farm from his parents.Mathew met his future wife, Julia Kilburg, at the wedding of his sister, Rose Michel, and Julia's brother, Peter Kilburg.
All 12 children of Mathew and Julia were born at the Michel family farm, located south of Springbrook, Iowa. The Michel family milked registered holstein cows, raised hogs, and grew the usual crops of corn, oats, and hay.Because there were years that the crops failed, Mathew went into the rock crushing business, as well as custom threshing of crops. After his barn burned down in 1946, he also went into the sawmill business.Unable to get wood, he decided to saw lumber for a new barn. The new bar was completed six years later in 1952.The Michel family was also a pioneer in producing electricity for their home and farm, having an electric plant in their house basement.Mathew and Julia lived and worked on the farm for 47 years until their retirement in 1965 when they moved off the farm and into a small residence on Main Street in Springbrook, Iowa.
Mathew and Julia's youngest son, Herman, took over the Michel Farm in 1963, after his marriage to Lois Burken.Even through retired, Mathew and Julia continued help Herman and Lois on the farm for two additional years before moving to Springbrook, Iowa.Herman and Lois worked on the Michel Farm with their four sons, Larry, Terry, Robert, and Thomas, for approximately 13 years.
Mathew passed away on May 23, 1968, at the age of 72.Julia continued to live in their Springbrook home until November 1990, when she sold the house and went to live at the Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue, Iowa. She only lived there a short time of four months until her death on 17 March 1991 at the age of 94.Her hobbies included crocheting and gardening. Both Mathew and Julie are buried at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church cemetery in Springbrook, Iowa.
On 23 December 1980, the Michel Farm was sold to Mathew and Julia's grandson, Mark Heiar (son of Delbert and Delores Heiar).Mark moved down to the farm in March 1981 after renting the land and milking the cattle since 1978.In 1984, Mark married Connie Kilburg, and they had three children including Jo Ann, Heather, and Tommy.Although the Michel Farm has seen many improvements in miking equipment and farm machinery over the years, the operations of everyday life still remain similar to those of his grandparents.Mark still milks in the barn that his grandfather, Mathew Michel, rebuilt in 1946-1952.The Michel Farm became a Century Farm in 1980, dating back to 1880 when Sebastian Michel, Mark's great-grandfather, first purchased the land.
