The 1870 Census finds John Milstead in Alexandria, Virginia living in a
boarding house headed by Mary Price.John's age was listed as 23.He was a
carpenter and was shown as being born in Virginia.

wharf.Martina Milstead was keeping house.The children were John H. 9,

reports that John and his parents were from Virginia.Martina and her
parents were born in Georgetown, D.C.The Milstead children were all born

The 1900 Census has the Milstead family living at 1100 King Street in
Alexandria, Virginia.Residents of the household were:

The July 22, 1906 edition of the Washington Post reported that Mr. Mahlon
Milstead, of East St. Louis, Ill. is visiting his parents on King Street.
The Washington Post reported on March 20, 1910 that Robert Bruce Milstead,
who has been the guest of relatives in King street, left last Saturday for
John Milstead was living with his wife Ellen in Alexandria, Virginia in
1910.(Note: do not know why wife is listed as Ellen.Have her listed as
Martina Rhodes. But, certain it is same one.)
The couple lived at 1001 King Street in Alexandria.John was 67; Ellen was
61.John worked as an engineer in a powerhouse.According to the Census,
the couple had been married 41 years and had 7 children, all of whom were
living in 1910.

The Sunday March 27, 1910 edition of the Washington Post (p. 15) reported
that "Mrs. Earl Vance Fisher, of Mobile, Ala. is the guest of her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. John H. Milstead at their home in King Street."
The October 15, 1911 edition of the Washington Post reported that Mr. and
Mrs. John Milstead and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Earl
Fisher, have moved to Washington where they will make their home.
The October 30, 1913 Washington Post announced the death of John H.
Milstead.The article noted," The body of John H. Milstead, a former
resident of Alexandria, who died at his home in Washington yesterday
morning, will be brought to this city for burial.Mr. Milstead was anative
of Occoquan and ws 71 years old.He is survived by his wife and seven
children, Mrs. J.E.Shinn, Mrs. Grace Talbot, Mrs. Marguerite Fisher, and
John, Bruce, Wilton and Mahlon Milstead."
The October 31, 1913 edition of the Post reported that the funeral of John
H. Milstead would be taking place that day at the residence of his daughter,
Mrs. J. Edward Shinn, 205 South Royal at 2:00 in the afternoon.Rev. P.P.
Phillips, rector of St. Paul's Protestant Church was to officiate.
The November 1, 1913 edition of the Post reported that the funeral had taken
place the previous day.It indicated that the burial was with Masonic
honors.Mr. Milstead having been a member of Alexandria-Washington Lodge
