Transcribed from 1910 hand-written notes of "Aunt Fannie", daughter of Ramsom Millard:
Before King Charles time, the Millards were French Huginots and were driven out of France to England and the Religious Wars.Great Grandmother (Esther) told me she rode General Burgoin's horse to water when he and his officers asked her Dad for breakfast and to water their horses. He called to her: 'Sissie, come here' and got off his horse and lifted her up unto the saddle and said 'now go ahead and show the men where to water'.She lived in Salem witchcraft days and told me about 73 or 74 years ago, that a neighbor woman was a witch and witched her mother's churn of cream and it never came butter.Great Great Grandma (Esther's mother) said 'ma churned and churned but it never came butter. The witch grabbed the dasher and pulled it up and down and said something'.The same thing happened to a batch of soap when Great Great Grandma (Esther's mother) would not loan the witch her tea kettle.Ma boiled and boiled that soap 3 days but it never made soap. She (Esther) was a little woman, never weighed 100 pounds, lived to be almost 99. Read, knit and sewed without glasses. She was Holland Dutch, called Mohawk Dutch because she came from Mohawk Valley. Her husband (Solomon) over-worked and went crazy and was put in an asylum. After a while, she was notified he was cured, come and get him. She went with a sled and a yoke of oxen. He became violent before she got him home. He stood up in the sleigh and yelled and beat the oxen. But he got over it, but kept having spells and made her chain him to the log house walls. She told me this and when I asked Aunt Mary (Mary Ermina Millard, daughter of Solomon and Diana) about it, she took me on her lap and talked to me and said, Fannie, promise me to never tell it, no man would want to marry you if he knew it."
