Ransom D. Smith (son of Gulielmus Smith)274, 275 was born April 11, 1761 in Hanover County, VA, and died August 12, 1855 in Marion County, Tennessee.He married Elizabeth Morse Moss on August 26, 1783 in Granville County, NC, daughter of Rueben Eaton Benjamin Morse Moss,Sr. and Martha Ann Jordan.
Notes for Ransom D. Smith:Ransom D. Smith (my g-g-g-grandfather), son of Gulielmus Smith, was born in April 11, 1761in Hanover Co, VA. He moved with his father and siblings to Granville Co, NC around 1768 where he married Elizabeth 'Betsey' Morse Moss on August 26, 1783 in Granville Co, NC. To this union was given 8 children. In the 1790 Census of Granville Co, NC, Hendersonville District, it shows him in Granville NC, same in 1800, no records in 1810, or 1820 but then he is listed in the 1830 of Campbell Co, TN, 1840 & 1850 Marion Co, TN Census. He followed his siblings and their families to Claiborne Co, TN, where he bought land. When they reached Tennessee, they had 2 male children and 1 female child other than Ransom and Elizabeth in the household. Then he moved to Campbell Co, TN and on to Marion Co, TN in 1831, with son Marcellus Smith.
Marion Co., Tennessee was created in 1817 from Indian lands, named in honor of Francis Marion (1732-1795), continental and Revolutionary War Officer whose guerilla tactics in the Revolutionary War won him the title, Swamp Fox. In Marion Co, TN, Ransom Smith died on August 12, 1855 and is buried in the Teague Cemetery, Marion Co, TN. Ransom was listed in the 1836 Marion Co., TN Tax List along with his son, Marcellus Smith. He is also listed in the 1850 Marion Co, TN Census as family # 272 being 90 years old and was a Pensioner, with his estate being worth $500.00 and being born in Virginia. Elizabeth is also listed along with him being 87 years old. No other persons listed in his household at that time.
Some say that Ransom Smith was one of the heroes of the battle of King's Mountain in the Revolutionary War but this has not been proven. I have his Military papers and there is no mention of the battle. In fact, it states that he saw no real battles just several skirmishes. Ransom's Pension number is S3925, showing he was a Private in the NC Militia. His pension was applied for in Oct. 12, 1832 from Marion Co, TN. It states that the Annual Allowance would be $40.00 and he had Rec. $100.00. In April 6, 1883, his pension was started at age 73 in Marion Co, TN. His Pension papers shows that, Ransom Smith (father of the Benjamin Smith who married Rhoda Proffitt, daughter of William Proffitt by his first marriage to Nancy Barron) specifies that he lived in Campbell Co. and migrated with others to Marion Co. TN.

1746- Granville County, NC was taken from Edgecomb County and formed.
1761-Ransom D. Smith was was born in Hanover Co, VA on April 11, 1761.
1766- Around 1766, Gulielmus Smith moved his family, including Ransom, to a Plantation in Granville Co, NC. Many early Granville County settlers came to the area from Hanover Co, VA. I believe it was because of the Indian problem they were having in Hanover County.

1783-Ransom Smith married on August 26, 1783, to Elizabeth Moss in Granville Co, NC.
1784-Robert Anderson Smith, son of Ransom and Elizabeth Smith, was born in Granville/Warren Co, NC.
1790-Ransom Smith is listed in the 1790 Census of Granville Co, NC, Hendersonville District.
1800-Ransom Smith is listed in the 1800 Census of Granville Co, NC, Hendersonville District.
1805-Ransom moved his family to Claiborne County, TN, where he was an land owner. Since he served in the Rev. War, he most likely had a land grant given to him from North Carolina for land in Tennessee. This may be the reason for him moving to Claiborne County, TN. He was about 44 years old when he came to Claiborne County, TN. Ransom is not mentioned in his father's will. It is believed that he got his inhertince when he moved away from the family. In 1805, their children were Anderson (21 yrs), Thomas (17 yrs), Sarah (15 yrs), Benjamin (14 yrs), Elmus (8 yrs), Reuben (4 yrs), Lucretia (2 yrs), Nancy (1 yr)

1857-Sequatchie County, Tennessee was created on December 9, 1857 by an act of the Tennessee legislature. In order to avoid an election, the legislature took the first and second districts of Marion County and the tenth district of Bledsoe County, and joined them on February 25, 1856 to Hamilton County. Then some twenty-two months later, the new County of Sequatchie was created. It is a little-known fact, but the Sequatchie County Court Minute Book A states that "there is in the hands of the Trustee of Grundy County, $79.93 3/4 due the 7th Scholastic District, 'formally' of Grundy County for the year 1857, and also the amount due that portion of the territory of said County which was attached to Sequatchie County by the last legislature for the year 1858.
The Sequatchie River, referred to in early deeds as Crow Creek, flows through the lush valley land. Some of the streams that empty into the river are Brush Creek, Coops Creek, Hicks Creek, and Woodcock Creek.
Many artifacts have been found to substantiate the fact that the earliest inhabitants of the area were Indians. Historians have stated that Hernando DeSoto and his party were in the area around 1540. Their studies show that the expedition rested for about a month at the town of Chiaha, thought to be Burns Island, in the Tennessee River, just beyond the mouth of the Sequatchie River. In 1809, Joel Wheeler was on the list of white settlers who were below the treaty line, in what was to become Sequatchie County.

I descend from Ransom Smith who came from North Carolina to Campbell County. He and much of his family later came to Marion County, TN. I descend from his oldest son Anderson Smith. Anderson married someone in the Campbell County area, but I do not know who. Anderson Smith migrated further west c1832, but he left one son, Abbot Smith and his family in Marion County, TN where they remained the rest of their lives. Abbot Smith married Charlotte Duke in the Campbell/Anderson Counties area. Can anyone help me find Anderson Smith's wife??? I have no clue , other than they named their son "Abbot", which name I cannot find in any of the other Ransom Smith family lines.

The book TENNESSEE WILLS AND ADMINISTRATIONS lists all wills on record in Tennessee for the years 1779-1861. I checked the name index and regret to say there is no listing for R. or Ranson SMITH.
I checked additional sources and found there was a fire at the Marion County courthouse in 1922 ... long before the Tennessee State Library and Archives began copying records at the courthouses in Tennessee. The earliest surviving will or probate record for Marion County is dated in 1875. If Ransom Smith died in Marion County prior to 1875, then I regret to say the will was destroyed.

Teague Cemetery, Whitwell, Marion Co. TN, Compiled by Glenda Schroeder, Sequatchie Co., Walden's Ridge, TN
Located off East Valley Road also known as N/S 283, on Teague Cemetery Road, at the base of Signal Mtn. (Walden's Ridge), just North of Powells Cross Roads close to the Looney's Creek area, Marion Co., Whitwell, Tennessee.
*Note: There were a couple of broken grave markers at the base of a large tree, I am not sure if the tree had grown up into the grave or if they had been discarded. One looked to be Ma------??? could not read the rest of the marker because it was weathered and broken. The second marker read, "Joshua E. Teague b. 23 Feb 1822 d. 19 Mar 1880. These dates are the same as the J. E. Teague, h/o Sarah S. Teague, who is listed in this cemetery list. Since the dates are the same, I have not listed Joshua E. Teague.
There are two Markers that are not graves and I have not put them in this Cemetery List. They are important though, and need to be mentioned.
1. In loving memory of JACK HOLLOWAY, S1C US NAVY, February 14, 1926, lost at sea aboard U.S.S. IND. July 30, 1945
2. In loving memory of HENRY EDWARD SMITH, US NAVY, January 23, 1922. Who gave his life at sea in the service of his Country, aboard the U.S.S. WASP March 19, 1945.
* About the middle of Teague Cemetery is the Monument/Grave Marker for Ransom Smith. This Monument is about 6 feet tall, and is the largest Grave Marker in the Cemetery. It reads:
Erected in memory of Ransom Smith, born in Hannover Co., VA, April 11, 1761. Resided in Granville Co., NC, in the Commencement of the Revolutionary War and served with North Carolina troops as follows:
3 months under Capt. Howell Lewis, unreadable, stone cracked and repaired, Barlett Seabry, and Col. Saunders. 3 months under Capt. Joseph Blackwell, ?--? Henderson, and Col. Malbury A. Frenchman. 3 months under Capt. Joseph Blackwell and Col. Joseph Taylor. He was allowed a pension October 12, 1832 at which time he was a resident of Marion Co, TN. Died August 12, 1855 aged 94y 4m and 1d.

There are a lot of unmarked graves, graves marked with just a rock or slab of stone, and some of the Grave Markers are so weathered that the name/dates are no longer there. The oldest barial I found was a Baby Girl Smith, she was buried in 1838.
One grave marker I was not sure which family to put her with and it reads like this:

***Ransom Smith is not buried in the Teague Cemetery. There is a Monument erected in his name only. It has been side that Elizabeth, wife of Ransom Smith, was buried in Sequatchie Co, TN and her grave was lost in a flood. I just got back, April 2003, from doing researching in Marion Co, TN. I spoke with many people who enlighten me to the area and it's history. Thomas Smith, son of Ransom Smith, stayed in Granville Co, NC, when his family moved to Claiborne Co, TN in 1805. He married and was expecting a child that year. After his son David was born, his wife died and he remarried in 1810 in Granville Co, NC to Catherine Coger. They started a family and in 1827, moved to Marion Co, TN. The first deed I can find that dentifies our Thomas was in 1827. I was told that many people came to buy up cheap Indian lands. The first deed I can find for Ransom Smith in Marion Co, TN, was in 1831. With him being on the Census of Campbell Co, TN in 1830 and finding a deed for him in Marion Co, TN in 1831, I feel he came to Marion County shortly after he was en in Campbell Co and before the winter of 1831. Ransom settled in the upper part of Marion Co, TN. I was told that plantations were not heard of in Marion Co after the 1860's but many were up in the Sequatchie Co, TN area. After looking at the map for the 1836 Tax list and seeing where the dist were, I figured out that Ransom Smith lived in the Dist 1 area, while Thomas Smith, his son lived in the Dist 2 area. In1855, Ransom died in the Marion Co, TN, Dist 1 area and was buried on his land. Elizabeth followed his death about 1857-1860. Thomas sold some of his land to the Teagues and after 1856, is living in the Dist 3 area. In 1856, the first two Dist's of Marion Co, TN was changed to Hamilton Co, TN and then in 1857, was transfered to Sequatchie Co, TN. Since Elizabeth Smith was not on the 1860 census and she is said to have died in Sequarchie Co, TN, which was Marion County when her husband died, I believe she died at home and was buried beside Ransom and like most, buried on their farm, on a hill near the house. They did have a flood in that area in 1920's and had some graves to be washed away. I believe her's and Ransom's were lost and this is why there is a monument erected in his memory, in the Teague Cemetery. Elizabeth is not listed on it, just Ransome. It is between Catherine Coger Smith and Dorcas Smith Richards. It has cracked and has been repaired.
The land that the cemetery is on was first the land that Thomas Smith bought when he first came to Marion Co, TN. He did later sell part of it to the Teagues, who were related to him and this is where he and his wife, children and grandchildren are buried.

* About the middle of Teague Cemetery is the Monument/Grave Marker for Ransom Smith. This Monument is about 6 feet tall, and is the largest Grave Marker in the Cemetery. It reads:
Erected in memory of Ransom Smith, born in Hannover Co., VA, April 11, 1761. Resided in Granville Co., NC, in the Commencement of the Revolutionary War and served with North Carolina troops as follows:
3 months under Capt. Howell Lewis, unreadable, stone cracked and repaired, Barlett Seabry, and Col. Saunders. 3 months under Capt. Joseph Blackwell, ?--? Henderson, and Col. Malbury A. Frenchman. 3 months under Capt. Joseph Blackwell and Col. Joseph Taylor. He was allowed a pension October 12, 1832 at which time he was a resident of Marion Co, TN. Died August 12, 1855 aged 94y 4m and 1d.
