Notes for Edmund Smith:Edmund Smith, son of Gulielmus Smith, was born about 1756 in Hanover Co, VA. He is sometimes refered to as Edward due to spelling and writing errors. He moved with his father and siblings sometime around 1765-66 to Granville Co, NC. There he married Elizabeth Daniel on January 25, 1779, in Granville Co, NC. To this union 2 children were given. He is found on the 1784 Tax Roll as Edward Smith, and on the 1790 Census of Granville Co, NC, Henderson District. He is found in Civil Court of Granville Co, NC in many court cases including 1783, 1784, 1786, 1794, 1795, 1796, 1801, 1802, 1813, and 1814. He is named in many Wills of friends and family and is named in his father's will... give to My Son, Edmund SMITH, two Negroes named Phil and Ned, to him, his Heirs & Assigns forever...in Warren Co, NC. It is said that he went to SC where he died, but this has not been proven. His brother, Ransom, was asked if he could prove his age or birth date for his pension papers. He stated he had seen the proof many times that his father had but his brother, Edmond had it now and he was in SC. In 1814, Elizabeth Daniel Smith is listed as giving Josiah Brown, of Person County, daughter Martha is the wife of Brown, a girl by the name of Nell, Granville Co, NC Deed Book W, Deed-1814, p.412. This tells us that Edmund was born in Hanover Co, VA, moved to Granville Co, NC and after father's death, was listed in Person Co, NC.

and EDMUND SMITH lying Adjacent to each other, being made one precinct of which the said
William Pulliam, and John Turner were appointed Overseers who made the return on the back of
the order, viz every man has processioned in our precinct excepting the Land of Mr. Thomas
Graham's and the orphans of James Turner, being Objected against by Mr. James Blackwell for not
being firmly laid out, this is done by us the subscribers. Subscribed by all the said parties.
(This can not be our Edmund Smith because of the date. He was not born yet but may have been named after him, if he was a brother to Gulielmus. After careful study of the naming patterns for the German people, I have concluded that an Edmund Smith may be the father of our Gulielmus Smith. Since it was tradition to name the first son after the Father's father, then this would be Edmund. Some have thought that Thomas was the first born son of Gulielmus Smith but after reading the penison papers of Ransom, he names his brother, Edmund as being the oldest. Continuing this pattern, the first female born is named after her mother's mother, the unknown spouse of Gulielmus's mother would be Nancy. The second male chid would be named after the wifes's father. This making the unknown spouse of Gulielmus parents would be a Thomas married to a Nancy. The second female child is named after the father's mother, and since Sarah was the second female child born, Gulielmus's mother would have been Sarah. There is another naming pattern that is the same for the males but the females are reversed. I believe this may be the correct pattern since in that pattern the third male in named after the father, and Gulielmus named his third son William 'Wiley' or Willie' Smith. This would make the parents of Gulielmus Smith a Edmund and Nancy Smith or Edmund or Sarah Smith depending on the pattern. The Unknown spouse of Gulielmus parents should be a Thomas and Sarah Unknown or Thomas and Nancy Unknown. This is a start. So this leads us back to this Edmund. This could be the father to Gulielmus.
Feb. 11, 1783, pg. 118, William BELL is listed as a garnishee at the suit of Joseph PARDUE, against Edmund SMITH, came into court and declared he had in his hands fifteen hundred weight of tobacco which the said SMITH had his bond for and he understands now, is lodged in the hands of William JOHNSON which said tobacco is considered as assets to settle by the said PARDUE when judgment.
1784-Edmond Smith is listed on Tax Roll of Granville Co, NC. His name is listed as Edward Smith. No Township is Listed on the NC Early Census Index NCS1a2843597. On July 21, 1784, pg. 52, Edward SMITH against D. STANLEY and EMMERSON, Action of Debt, a Jury being sworn do say that they find the bond not paid and assess the Plaintiff damages to £45.4 and costs.
