Notes for Robert McCleland:
McClelland (McClellan, McClelen, McLellan) information is taken from family records, "The McClellans and Allied Families" and numberous other documents.
Robert McClelland sailed from Belfast, Ireland on August 17,1767 aboard the "Earl of Donegal". Duncan Ferguson was master of the ship and they sailed into the Charleston, SC harbor on December 3, 1767 with 250 Protestants aboard. Robert, age 19, was awarded a bounty of 100 acres of land in Craven Co., SC, as recorded in council Journal 33, at a council meeting dated December 22, 1767 at Charleston, SC.
Although no proof has been found on the parents of Robert, it is known that when he arrived in South Carolina aboard the "Earl of Donegal" at the age of 19. There was also family of McClelands onboard the same ship. This family included: James McCleland, age 48; Catherine McCleland, age 46; Henry, age 14; John McCleland, age10; Martha McCleland, age 8; and William McCleland, age 3. Robert's age is such that it could be possible that he was the oldest son and just not listed with the rest of the family. There is also a Margaret McClelan, age 21 (not listed at same location); However, some of the given names in this family do not appear to be common to Robert's decendents (ie. James, Catherine, and Henry.) A great deal of further research will be necessary before Robert's parents are known for sure.
The fact that Robert came from Ireland to South Carolina also came from family documents and was restated by his great-grandson, Bailey G. McClelen, in a letter dated Sept. 26, 1922.
Robert was probably married to Anne ? before the end of December 1767, either before departure, during the trip, or just after arriving in SC, as their oldest son, Samuel, was born Sept. 22, 1768.
Robert, in the South Carolina Historical Commission Files claimed service as both a footman and a horseman in the Revolutionary War and enlisted first in December 1778 under Captain Richard Sadler. Col. Bratton certifies as to the service. Robert enlisted again in December of 1781 and once more on the 17th of Feb. 1782. Lt. John Long certifies as to the service and indents that were issued to Robert McClelland. DAR National #633546.
Robert and wife, Anne, resided on Fishing Creek, York Co., SC, which was adjacent to Catawah Indian Reservation in the northeast corner of York Co., SC.
Robert's will was probated on January 19, 1802 in Will Book "A", page 67, file no. 277, York District, SC. His will was dated December 10, 1801.
