Notes for James Buchanan (Buck) Robertson:
[v06t3413.ftw]
Buck was shot and killedSun. night, June 4th, near Eagle Rock by H.W.
Montague of Granville Co. NEWS AND OBSERVER,(June 7, 1911 pg 1, June 9,
1911 pg 5). Buck was home from Campbell College where he was enrolled as a
pre- ministerial student. A party of young people, including H.W.
Montague, Clarice Robertson, W.J. Cowan, Annie Pulley, and Flossie and
Ethel Hicks was returning from a neighbor's ice cream party and were near
the home of R.H. Hicks of Eagle Rock. Montague had been forbidden by Geo.
Everette from paying attention to his daug. Clarice. Buck went to talk to
Montague, but there was a dispute. The newspapers said Buck shot Montague
in the arm. Montague shot back twice, the 1st bullet wounding Buck in the
chest, the 2nd bullet tearing up his face. Buck fell and fired across his
body at Montague. There is a dispute concerning whether Montague shot him
as he lay dying on the ground. Montague was charged with the killing and
pled self defense. Rev. F.M. Hillard, pastor at Knightdale's Bethany Ch.,
noted that Buck always did his part in church and Sunday Sch. work. He was
buried at Bethany beside his sister Clarice, where his parents were later
buried.
