Note: Fortune moved from Carrickfergus, Ireland to Guilford County, North Carolina. With him, came his brother Forlin.
Note: Fortune Dobbs came to North Carolina in about 1750 with his twin brother Forlin. They settled on the estate of Gov. Arthur Dobbs (supposed kinsman). Originally the brothers were of Tory sympathy but after moving to Abbeville County, SC Fortune turned to the Patriot cause and served in the militia of SC during the Rev. War. Fortune was interested in fruit growing and developed the Dobbs apple which was considered a great delicacy in those days.
In 1773, Fortune and Forlin lived in Guilford Co., NC Listed in 1790 Census for Abbeville Co., 96th District, SC. Brother William stayed in NY; Dobbs Ferry there is probably named for him. Moved to SC and then to GA in 1832. Is listed as one of the drawers in the 1832 Cherokee Land Lottery, p. 179 From the Cherokee Co. Heritage Book: Most researchers agree that Fortunatus was a kinsman of Arthur Dobbs, Royal Governor of North Carolina during the mid-1700s. Evidently Fortunatus was a Supercargo sailing along the Atlantic coast and this enabled him to meet and marry about 1752 Mary Adams of the presidential Adams Family of Massachusetts and Maryland.
