She attended Western Illinois State Teachers College in Macomb and taught school for several years in the early 1920s in Emmet Township and Sciota, Ill.After moving to Macomb, she helped her husband purchase an auto repair business with money she had saved from teaching and the small inheritance received from her father.As co-owner of Slusher Battery and Electric Service, she ran the office, did the bookkeeping, sent out and collected due bills, and helped in the parts department.She continued to run the business after her husband Ellis died, closing it in 1983 because of failing health.Wilma was a member of the First Baptist Church of Macomb for more than 50 years, serving most of those years as primary Sunday School teacher.She was active in the Macomb Mosaic Club,The Macomb Woman's Club, and Macomb's Business and Professional Women's Club, serving terms as president of all three.She was also active in literary organizations.POM
