I am looking for information about my great paternal grandparents: Franz Carl Nickels and Ida C. Dumont. Franz Carl Nickels of was born in Anhalt, Dessau and married Ida C. Dumont of Marienwereder(West Prussia)after each immigrated separately into the United States in the mid 1800's.1920 census records show tht IDA entered in 1867.Her age would have been approximately 14. The 1880 census (OHIO) shows that they had three children born to them in Missourri. They are Ida (1872), Theodore (1876), and Eduard (1878).Unfortunately, Missourri did not require births to be registered until later in the century. The 1920 census shows Ida saying that she had 11 children but that in 1920, only five were still alive. (Ida, Theodore, George, Minnie, and Frank,) Marienwerder isnot the Marienwerder of today. It is a city about 50 miles south of Gdansk Poland.Original manuscripts discuss Ida's uncle, Eduard Dumont having to go down to Garnsee for birth records.Garnsee was about twelve miles south of the then Marienverder. Family legend says that Ida Came over as an indentured servant and that Franz wasButcher. This is consistent with the Cleveland directory which had him listed as proprietor of a meat market and lived at 65 Hamburg Street. In 1880 Franz was 37 and Ida 28. Any help is greatly appreciated. | |
