Notes for Frances Adam:
The following was written by Theresa (Ullrich) Martin in 1985:
My grandmother Frances Adams (1874-1951) came to Reynolds, ND when she was six years old.She was on the ship for 3 weeks.Aunt Helen said she fell overboard once, and she also fell into a well at Reynolds. So she was really scared of water. She would NEVER go for a boat ride for all the money in the world. She had an aunt at Reynolds to help them settle when they arrive there.Living in a new country was difficult, and her dad cried a lot, but eventually later did well at farming. When Frances and her parents first arrived to Reynolds, they stayed with the Schottheofers. The Adams and Schotthoefers were related. In 1881, Frances' father (Jacob Adam)homestead in southern Grand Forks County.
My grandmother was a very kind lady. When we (Ellen and I) stayed at her place in high school, she cooked for us and cared for us.She knit mittens at Christmas time for us.She was a "saint."She would go to mass often. Many mornings while we were getting ready for school, she would sit in her rocker near the bay window in the dining room, and read prayers out loud from her prayer book.
Frances had five sisters and two brothers. One sister lived in Canada, and another lived in Bathgate, ND.Her two brothers stayed in the Reynolds area. Her one sister, Aunt Anne married Fred Allmaras, a brother to Jake Allmaras. They lived a few miles from them and I remember them. They had three children. My two great uncles had diabetes. Also, two of my aunts and Mom got it when they were older.
In their later years when they retired, they moved into New Rockford.Their home in town is the big square white house with a front porch. We would stop in there after church on Sundays. So would Bill Almaras' family and others. We also would go there for Christmas Eve.My aunts and uncles and cousins also gathered there. We would go to bed for a bit, and then get up to attend Midnight Mass. Also, sometimes went in to Grandma's for Easter. One time Joe took us kids all to the show Easter afternoon. Some got in for kids fare, but were older.Ha!We enjoyed going up to the big attic and looking at all the "stuff."One room was kept for Anna when she would come home from teaching in Minot. When I made my first Holy Communion,Alf and our mothers (Mom and Aunt Katherine) stayed in town with me and Alf so we could be ready in the morning. We enjoyed sitting in the front porch.
My aunt said my grandmother practiced conservation and recycling long before it was the thing. She went to different ladies aide groups. She crocheted lots and lots of doilies, and sewed and canned, and baked the best whole wheat bread I have ever tasted. She never had money to waste and had to be very careful with what she bought.I also never heard her complain about anything. As I said, she had a deep faith and love. She had natural curly hair.
