Gustave Adolph Schneider (b. 27 December 1874, d. 22 March 1940)
Notes for Gustave Adolph Schneider:
Gustave Adolph Schneider was the son of Caroline Rampmeier and Jacob Schneider. He was born in Chicago, IL in 1974, the middle child of 7 children. His early years are unknown to me...he married a May Renn when he was quite young and they apparently lived in Iowa for awhile and had one daughter, Alys. They were divorced and then remarried and apparently divorced again. He joined the Navy and fought in the Spanish-America War, serving on the USS Oregon in the Phillipines. Gus was a very talented artist, and a very talented musician.I have booklets from shows (vaudeville type shows) that he put on in the Navy and in community productions.I remember a play he put on in North Fork and one in Oakhurst when I was very young - he and my brother, Frank, did a tap dance routine and a comedy routine.I thought they were wonderful. He was never terribly happy on the ranch because it was impossible to make it a self-supporting entity. When they lived in Southern California, he had worked at the Max Sennet Studio, he developed some helpful stage props thatwere used for years. His paintings are incredible. He painted a mural in the house that they built in Hawthorne, CA (1913-1921).We were fortunate to be able to see it in 1976, it was still in great shape and there are pictures in this book .He was totally incredible,I wish that I could have known him better. He died when I was 12, but he left home when I was 10 because of his health.I did get to meet a couple of his brothers and one sister but I was too young to learn anything about their family from them.He painted for the U.S. Forest Service, painting pictures and even painting houses. He also painted signs, pictures and anything else that people wanted because when he lived in Oakhurst, the family needed any help they could get to survive. Their was a picture of Yosemite hanging in a restaurant in Fresno that was there until the late 1960's.We ate there just to look at the picture. We tried to buy it when they were tearing down the restaurant but it was on a canvas tarp, about 20 x 40 feet and in bad condition. There were two of his paintings in the U.S. Forest Service office in North Fork, they were lost in a fire in 1992 and we have no pictures of them.
Gustave was married to a May Renn and had one daughter, Alys, but this information is redundant to our family history.
