I have just begun to research my family history.I live in Australia and my name is Diane Elisabeth Oakes. My maiden name was Stretton.I am beginning my research with my mothers side of the family and am particularly interested in information pertaining to the LETT family who were from County Wexford and County Carlow in Ireland.
My great great grandfather,RALPH WALKER LETT, was born in Ireland in 1817 and came to Australia - possibly in 1883 - although I can find no record of his arrival. He died in NSW on Dec 27 1910 aged 93. I know his four unmarried daughters arrived in Sydney NSW Australia as assissted migrants aboard the ship the Allanshaw on 5/2/1883. Strangely their father is not listed on this ship with them. The girls were ELLEN 25yrs,ANNA 21yrs, SARAH 19yrs,and ELIZABETH 17yrs.
The last known address for the family in Ireland was:-Ballycormack House, Bagenalstown Town, County Carlow Ireland. Although Ralph Walker and his ancestors were natives of County Wexford.
I believe Ralph Walker Lett was the son of WILLIAM LETT and ANN HINCKS.He seems to have had three sisters, SARAH, KITTY and MARY.
ELLEN was my great grandmother and she married a CHARLES CARLSON in Sydney. She had nine children, one of whom was my grandmother MABEL SARAH CARLSON who married WILLIAM LYONS.
My mother was the oldest of 6 surving children and her name was ELLEN MAY LYONS. There was also BETTY, RALPH, WILLIAM, HAROLD and GLADYS.
My mother, ELLEN married EDWARD JOHN JOSEPH STRETTON and they had four children, MICHAEL, EDWARD, Diane(myself) and RALPH.
I would very much appreciate any information on any of the foregoing names and would be more than happy to share whatever information I have.
