|I am researching the ODOM family from Village Green, Sumner County, TN. Maud(e) Odom, the mother of John B. Odom, first appeared in the 1860 slave census as a unnamed four year old mulatto girl on the Joseph Thorpe Elliston Odom farm along with what appears to be her mother and two sisters.|
In 1870,(After emancipation) Maud continued to reside there without her mother and two sisters.I suspect this arrangement was as a result of the Freedmen's Bureau Indenture of Apprenticeship program to assimilate former slaves into mainstream society.
In 1880, at age 24, Maud has three children, Hardy, Louise and John Bayless Odom.Shortly afterwards, Maud would give birth to a daughter, naming her Mary Alice Odom.
Around 1886, Maud eventually marry a man by the name of Frank Fulton, they move into town (Gallatin)on Locust Street. Two sons by the name of Peter and Hallie Fulton; daughters, Mabel Fulton-King, Effie Fulton-Lowe, Martha Fulton-Haynes, Sallie Fulton-Harris and Elnora "Curlie" Fulton-Williams were a culmination of this marriage. After Frank's death, Maud lived in Nashville with daughter Mabel and grandchildren.
All the Fulton children would eventually relocate to Cleveland, OH, including Mary Alice.Maud Odom died in Cleveland, OH, April 29, 1939, and is buried in Harvard Grove Cemetery. The Fulton children as well as Mary Alice are buried in Cleveland.Effie returned to Tennessee and is buried in the Gallatin City Cemetery (1967).
I am researching the parents and sisters of Maud Odom-Fulton.I strongly believe her mother was a woman by the name of Mary Malone of Trousdale County, TN (Maidservant of Joseph Odom's wife, Jane "Jennie" Malone-Odom) and one sister may have been a Peggy Malone-Pursley of Hartsville, TN, who had a son by the name of Charley Pursley.
In addition, I am researching the Garretts and Jacksons of Sumner County, TN and the Walkers and Bigbees of Robertson County, TN.Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am also willing to share any information that I have.
