Hew waqs born about 1834 in North Carolina and was a farmer.Caldwell and his wife, Sarah, had three children in 1860. He was a private. In 1860 he was head of a household in Union County. The Salt Roll had a "Thomas Caldwell" in Union County and "T. Caldwell" in Lumpkin. In June 1863 Dahlonega citizens requested that Caldwell work as a blacksmith in their community, but the Adjutant General refused to detail him. Thomas Caldwell was on the initial muster-in roll. The September roll showed that he "Died in hospital Aug 19th 1863."
